Eläkeläiset

Eläkeläiset ( Finnish. "Senior Citizens" ) - Finnish ensemble playing music in the style of humppa . It was formed in 1993 . Throughout the existence of the ensemble, its composition underwent some changes, but the most constant participants are Onni Varis ( keyboards , vocals ), Martti Varis ( bass , vocals), Petteri Halonen (keyboards, guitar , vocals), Lassi Kinnunen ( accordion , vocals) and Christian Wootilainen ( drums , vocals). Also, the origins of the creation of the group were the guitarist Petteri Teryavya , however, there is no need to talk about the reliability of surnames and names - all musicians use pseudonyms (for example, Onni Varis and Martti Varis, contrary to popular belief, they are not at all relatives or even namesakes) Ilmari Koivuluhta (sound engineering and transport) and Pekka Jokinen (decoration).

Music

“Eläkeläiset” mainly performs cover versions of famous rock and pop hits, processed in the manner of a humppa or a slower yenka . At the same time, the compositions are supplied with new Finnish text and names, and sometimes it is almost impossible to identify the original. Up to the album “Werbung, Baby!” ( 1999 ), the names of all the songs in the ensemble contained the Humppa, Jenkka or Polkka component.

An energetic, sparkling humor style of performance made Eläkeläiset popular far beyond Finland. This group is associated with a new surge of interest in the hump at the end of the 20th century .

Speeches

According to the musicians themselves, "Eläkeläiset" give from 80 to 100 concerts a year, of which about 20 in Finland and from 40 to 50 in Germany . The ensemble avoids major performances, but took part in several international festivals. So, “Eläkeläiset” participated in the German metal festival Wacken Open Air (W: O: A), and on December 6, 2003 performed at the Finnish Contemporary Art Festival “Independence Night” in the Moscow club “B2”.

Eläkeläiset is especially popular with OpenBSD developers and is often played on their hackathons .

On August 13, 2005 , the Eläkeläiset performed at the Vahinko 2005 festival in Joensuu with their original line-up from 1993-1994: Varis, Teryavia, Varis and Voututilainen.

During the tours, musicians travel on their own truck, preferring it to bus . The ensemble members like to joke about the fact that they use their tours to smuggle alcohol, and even periodically post cards on the group’s official website that indicate the location of hiding places with “treasures”.
