Biography

Marcel Marceau was born on March 22, 1923 in Strasbourg , into a Jewish family of immigrants from Poland . Interest in acting has aroused Marceau after becoming acquainted with Chaplin’s films at the age of five. Attended the School of Decorative Arts in Limoges , then studied at the Paris Theater of Sarah Bernard with director Charles Düllen and actor Etienne Decrou (it was Decrou who taught Marceau mimic art).

During the Second World War, he was forced to flee with his family, and together with his brother participated in the Resistance . Most of his relatives, including his parents, died in Auschwitz . The nickname "Marceau" took in the ranks of the Resistance - in honor of the revolutionary general Marceau-Degravier .

In 1947, Marceau created the stage image of the clown Beepa - a white-faced clown in a striped sweater and a battered hat, which brought him worldwide fame. At the same time organized a troupe "Commonwealth of Mimes", which lasted until 1960 . His productions went on the best stages, including the “ Theater of Sarah Bernard ” and “ Theater of the Champs Elysees ”.

For decades he performed solo. He repeatedly went on tour to the Soviet Union , for the first time in 1961, in particular, Leonid Kvinikhidze ’s film “Bip remains in Leningrad” (1962) is devoted to him in particular [1]

In 1978, Marceau created the Paris School of Pantomime .

According to one of the versions, it was under the influence of the reprise “Going upwind” Marceau that Michael Jackson’s moon walk was born [2] .

In 1996, he founded a foundation to support the art of pantomime in the United States .

Marceau was awarded the Legion of Honor - the highest state award of France. In 2002, he became the UN Goodwill Ambassador.

He died on September 22, 2007 at the age of 85.
