Geography
The area of the territory is 6101 km². The rivers Aude , Orb , Hérault , Vidurl, and others flow through the department. The mountain range of the Cevennes is in the north.
In the valleys, the climate is warm; almond , olive , mulberry , fig trees grow; developed winemaking . Minerals include iron , hard coal , marble and lignite [1] .
The department includes 3 districts, 49 cantons and 343 communes.
History
Herault is one of the first 83 departments formed during the Great French Revolution in March 1790. It originated in the territory of the former province of Languedoc . The name comes from the river Herault .
