Pico ( port. Ilha do Pico [ 'iʎɐ du' piku ]) - an island belonging to the central group of the Azores archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean , belongs to Portugal . This is a large island with an area of 447 km², with a population of 14,148 people (2011), the highest point is Pico Mountain with a height of 2351 m. The island is located 7 km east of Faial Island and 15 km south of São Jorge Island. The island stretches for 42 km in length, and is 15 km wide.

Geography
Mount Pico - part of the North Atlantic Ridge , the highest point in Portugal - rises to 2351 m above sea level and 6098 m goes under water. Pico is the mountain with the largest underwater part and is listed in the Guinness Book of Records .
The last eruption of the volcano was in 1963 - with small underwater aftershocks off the northwestern coast. The strongest eruptions were in 1562 - 1564 , 1718 and 1720 . The paths of lava flows are still visible.
Already at a distance of 5-8 km from the coast, the ocean has a depth of more than 1000 m.
Island administration structure
The island is divided between the municipalities of Lajes do Pico , São Roque do Pico and Madalena .
Economy
The main occupation of the residents is viticulture and tourist services. Until 1980, the island was the center of whaling .
Attractions
The volcanic landscape in combination with unique vineyards became famous and in 2004 they were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site .
