Author tables - special tables by which the author’s mark is determined for each publication.

The copyright mark should not be confused with the Ketter mark ( English Cutter number ) - this is the symbol of the first word, with which the first element of the bibliographic description begins. It consists of the initial letter of the word and the number corresponding to the first, and sometimes subsequent letter combinations of the same word. Sometimes the scope of an author’s mark extends not to one word, but to two or more.

Ordinal word - the word from which the bibliographic description of the publication begins.

Author tables

With various systems of arrangement of the book fund, one of the main signs is the alphabet . It is advisable to extremely simplify the arrangement, making it as purely mechanical as possible. Significant relief and acceleration of this operation is achieved by using tables of copyright marks.

The copyright signs that make up the table allow you to arrange books in the exact alphabetical order, almost without thinking about which of them should be alphabetically before and which later, and guided only by an alphanumeric sequence.

According to the table for the Cyrillic alphabet, you can assign both binary and ternary numbers of the copyright sign. Ternary numbers are obtained by decimal division of each binary number. In this case, ternary numbers are consistent and connected with binary.

For convenience and space saving, the neighboring letters of the alphabet are grouped in two (A and B, C and D, etc.), and the column of numbers equally refers to each combination of letters formed by them.

Aa12Ba
Aac121Baban
Aal122Babaya
Aam123Babe
Aan124Baben

Copyright marks are in strictly alphabetical order. They are indicated by the corresponding letter and numbers: binary - from 11 to 99, ternary - from 11 to 999.

Location of copyright mark in print

The location of the copyright mark in a printed publication in the USSR was determined according to GOST 7.4–77 and GOST 7.4–86, and in Russia it is determined by GOST 7.0.4–2006.

For books, this is the upper left corner of the cover of the title page - immediately below the BBK index with an indent of three letters from the left edge. The classification indexes UDC , BBK and the copyright mark form the cipher of the publication.

UDC665.53- classification index UDC
BBK76.17- BBK classification index
T99- copyright sign

The copyright mark is also an obligatory element of the layout of the annotated catalog card , where it is placed opposite the second line of the bibliographic description.
