The deep blue [1] ( lat. Columba janthina ) is an island species of pigeons that inhabits forests from the south of Honshu Island to the Ryukyu archipelago , as well as in the south of Nampo in the Pacific Ocean . The pigeon is almost black with a metallic sheen, from purple on the head to greenish on the neck, chest and back.

It nests in a niche of trees, rocks and a fork in the branches, in the nest there is only one egg.

The nominative subspecies Columba janthina janthina is already considered rare in Japan . The southern subspecies Columba janthina stejnegeri nests only on the islands of Ishigaki , Iriomote and Yonaguni (in the south of the Ryukyu archipelago ), is threatened with extinction and has been protected by law since 1972 . The third subspecies Columba janthina nitens with a reddish tinge of the plumage of the head was preserved only on a few islands in the groups of Ogasawara (Bonin) and Kazan (Volkano) in Oceania . It is declared a natural monument of Japan.
