Butsov, Evgeny Karlovich

Eugene Karlovich Butsov ( fr. Eugene de Bützow ; 1837-1904) - Russian diplomat. He acted as the first permanent representative of Russia in Japan , the second in China , as well as the envoy to Greece , Iran and Sweden . Privy Councilor (since 1887).

Biography

Eugene Butsov was born in 1837 in a Swedish -born family of hereditary Russian diplomats Butsovs (i.e. Bitsov , Bützow ). His father, Karl Karlovich Butsov (1791-1852), was in 1832-1842 the consul general in Danzig, and since 1842 in Genoa [1] ; cousin Nikolai Nikolayevich Butsov (1750-1833) was charge d'affaires in Spain in 1795-1799 [2] .

In 1856, after graduating from the Alexander Lyceum , E. K. Butsov became the Secretary for Diplomatic Affairs under the Governor General of Eastern Siberia N. N. Muravyov .

He participated in negotiations with China, leading to the conclusion of the Aigun Treaty of 1858 .

Since 1858 - in the service of the Russian Foreign Ministry .

In the period 1862-1873 he worked in diplomatic and consular missions in China and Japan: in 1862-1865 he served as consul in Tianjin, in 1865-1869 in Hakodate, in 1869-1870 he was a charge d'affaires in China, in 1871 he became the first Russian Consul in Yokohama , combining this position with the post of Charge d'Affaires of Russia in Japan.

From 1873 to 1883, he was an envoy to the Qing Empire. Together with N.K. Girs on the part of Russia and Zeng Jijze on the part of China, he signed the Russo-Chinese Treaty of the Ili Region (1881) .

From 1884 to 1889, he was the envoy of Russia in Greece .

From 1889 to 1897, he was the envoy of Russia in Iran .

From 1897 to 1904 he was an extraordinary envoy in Stockholm, at the court of the King of Sweden and Norway. [3]

Evgeny Karlovich Butsov died on October 17, 1904 in the city of Baden . He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery in St. Petersburg. [four]

Collection

Petersburg collector A.A. Polovtsov , with the help of his friend in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, predecessor of Butsov as ambassador to China, A. G. Vlangali bought the objects of Chinese art collected by Butsov during his service in China. Currently, they are represented in the Chinese collection of the Hermitage . [5]

  • Konstantin (1873-1932) - graduated from the Alexander Lyceum in 1894; diplomat; died in exile in Clamart (France).
  • Boris (1879—?) - Colonel, Advisor to the Department of Personnel and Economic Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs [6]
  • Olga (1877-1925) - maid of honor of the Empress Alexandra Fedorovna ; in 1915 she married Major General Admiralty G. N. Papa-Fedorov [7]
  • Nina - wife of Botkin Sergey Dmitrievich , secretary of the embassy in Vienna [8]
  • Natalya is married to Baranovsky
  • Sergei (1884-1915?) - Lieutenant of the Life Guards Preobrazhensky Regiment; died in battle in the Kholm province , buried at the Novodevichy cemetery in St. Petersburg
  • Vladimir (1887—?) - poet-lyricist, author of romances, pianist, became famous among the post-revolutionary Parisian emigration, as he was an excellent accompanist.
