He graduated from the philological faculty of Leningrad State University (1987) and graduate school of the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Linguistics of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1990). Pupil A.V. Desnitskaya and P.A. Dmitriev .
Candidate of Philological Sciences (USSR, 1991), doctor habilitatus (Germany, 1997), Doctor of Philological Sciences (Russia, 1998).
Private Associate Professor (since 1997) and unscheduled professor (ausserplanmaessiger Professor, since 2003) of the University of Marburg (Germany), professor of the Department of General Linguistics (since 2007) and professor of the Department of Slavic Philology (since 2015), Faculty of Philology, St. Petersburg State University.
Chief Researcher, Institute of Linguistic Studies, RAS (OR RAS). In 2012-2014, he was a representative of OR RAS at the General Meeting of the Academy of Sciences .
He was a research fellow at the University of Marburg (Faculty of Foreign Languages; Institutes of Slavic Studies , General Linguistics and English) and the Balkan Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna.

Areas of scientific interests are Balkan linguistics and areal typology , comparative historical Slavic linguistics , comparative and synchronous descriptive Slavic linguistics , Russian and Paleo-Slavistics , Old Slavonic , Church Slavonic , Serbian , Croatian , Macedonian , Bulgarian , Albanian , Aru language , Greek , dialectology and linguistic geography , ethnolinguistics , history of languages and cultures of Southeast Europe .
In his Ph.D. thesis, he studied the causes and mechanisms of changing the linguistic system from synthetism to analyticism (using the history of Serbian, Macedonian and Bulgarian nominal systems as examples), and in his doctoral dissertation he solved the problem of an objective description and attribution of the Torlak dialect - the disputed dialects of Eastern Serbia and Western Bulgaria .
He described and compared morphosyntax and syntax , vocabulary and ethnolinguistics of the most representative dialects of the Balkan languages, develops the theory of convergent linguistic communities ( linguistic unions ), explores the languages of the symbiotic communities of the Balkan Peninsula, the language of Slavic verbal monuments of writing.
Member of the American Linguistic Society of America (LSA), the European Linguistic Society (Societas Linguistica Europaea (SLE)), the International Association of Linguistic Typology ( ALT ). Member of the German Slavic Union (Deutscher Slavistenverband).
