Andenes was expelled from the municipality of Dverberg on January 1, 1924. On January 1, 1964, through the merger of Andenes, Dverberg and Björnskin , a new municipality of Annoy was created.

Andenes is the northernmost settlement of the island of Annoia and the Nordland county. To the east of it is the island of Senja , and to the west is the endless horizon of the North Atlantic . Locals call the city Nordlyskommunen (the community of the Polar Lights ).

Title

The ancient Norse form of the name Andarnes (from the original * Amdarnes ). The first element is the genitive case from Emd ( Ömd ) (the old name for the island of Annoya ), the last element is the nes cape.

History

Already during the Iron Age, Andenes was an important fishing village. By the beginning of the 20th century, it had become one of the largest fishing ports in Norway.

Andenes was a separate municipality from 1924 to 1964, until Andenes, Dverberg and Bjørnshin were merged into the new municipality of Annoy. Andenes is the residence of the head of the municipality, and it is also the administrative center of the municipality. At the beginning of the 80s of the 20th century, the population of the city was 3,770 people, which made it the most populated city of Vesterolen . The reduction of the aerodrome's territory and the general population centralization in Norway have led to a dramatic decrease in population over the past 20 years.

Airfield

The decision to build an airfield was made in 1952 and financed by most of NATO . It is located between Hyouins and Andenes. The first Douglas DC-3 aircraft of the Royal Norwegian Air Force ( KNOCA ) landed on the runway on September 17, 1954. However, the airfield did not operate fully until September 15, 1957.

In 1961, the 333rd Squadron from the Sola airfield, consisting of Grumman HU-16 Albatross , was transferred here. In 1969, they were replaced by the Lockheed P-3 Orion . In 1989, the Lockheed P-3C Orion replaced the outdated P-3B. Two non-performing P-3B resources were converted to P-3N for patrols in the Norwegian Coast Guard. In addition to fishing, the airfield of Annoy was the most significant workplace in Anneuil since the 1970s.

Geography

The city is located 300 km north of the Arctic Circle and the polar day here lasts from May 19 to July 25 . The sun is below the horizon from November 25 to January 28 .
