It was founded in 1882 , before that it was part of Kerimäki and Heinävesi . In addition to the village of the same name, it includes Hanhijärvi, Ihamaniemi, Joutsenmäki, Karvila, Laasala, Makkola, Muhola, Paakkunala, Parkumäki, Simanala, Suurimäki and Vuorikoski.
Most of the population of Enonkoski belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church . The parish church in the village of Enonkoski was built in 1886 according to the project of M. Schjerfbeck. Also in Enonkoski is the only Evangelical Lutheran monastery in Finland that offers a place for 12 people - but currently only Virva Tyrväinen’s sister lives there permanently.
The largest enterprise in Enonkoski is a fish farm engaged in artificial fish farming.
The commune is dominated by forest and lake landscape, in the north is the Kolovesi National Park . Of interest to tourists is the Hovimäki mansion, built in 1854 . Now there are a restaurant and a hotel.
