Biography
Alfred von Waldersee was born on April 8, 1832 in the city of Potsdam in the Prussian province of Brandenburg.
He was brought up in the Prussian cadet corps, in 1850 he was released as second lieutenant into the guards artillery brigade. In 1850-1852 he attended the course of the joint engineering and artillery school [1] .
He participated in the Austro-Prussian war of 1866, was promoted to majors [1] .
At the end of the war he was transferred to the General Staff and seconded to the Prussian Embassy at the French court [1] .
During the Franco-Prussian war , the rank of lieutenant colonel was in the retinue of the Prussian king William I. After the war he was promoted to colonel and appointed commander of the 13th Lancer Regiment [1] .
In 1874, he married Mary Esther Lee, the daughter of a New York merchant who had previously been married to Friedrich Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg .
He accompanied Emperor William I on foreign trips, including in 1873 in St. Petersburg. In 1876 he was promoted to major general [1] .
Since 1881 - Assistant to the Chief of General Staff Moltke . In 1888 he replaced Moltke as chief of the general staff. Since 1891 - commander of the IX Army Corps [1] .
In 1900, with the consent of the powers, he was appointed commander-in-chief of international forces aimed at suppressing the Ihehtuan uprising , but arrived in China when the Allied forces had already occupied Beijing and showed nothing [1] .
Alfred von Waldersee died on March 5, 1904 in Hanover.
