The club was founded in 1955, in 1999 entered the J-League .
The name "Albirex" is a combination of the words " Albireo ", the name of a star from the constellation Cygnus (white swan is a symbol of the club) and "rex" (from lat. - "king"). Until 1997, the club was simply called “Albireo”, however, before entering the J-League, it was forced to change its name due to possible conflicts with other registered trademarks.
Along with Urava Reds , it boasts the largest attendance among Japanese clubs.
Since 2004, a club called Albirex Niigata Singapore has been playing in the Singapore S-League .
