The coat of arms of Sierra Leone (along with the flag ) was developed by the Heraldic Chamber and presented in 1960. The shield on arms depicts a lion below the zigzag border, representing the Lion Mountains, after which the country was named. It also features three torches that are meant to symbolize education and progress. At the heart of the wavy lines depicting the sea. On the side of the shield are lions, similar to those that were previously on the colonial version. The three main colors of the shield - green, white and blue - were used to form the flag. Green represents agricultural and natural resources, blue represents Freetown Harbor, and white represents unity and justice. At the base of the shield is the national motto "Unity, Freedom, Justice."
