Albizia julibrissin Durazz. , 1772

The following Russian names of the plant are found: Lankaran acacia, silk acacia, silk bush, silk tree, gyul-ebrishim [3] .

The first part of the scientific name - Albizia - comes from the name of Florentine Filippo del Albiztsi ( Italian. Albizzi ), who introduced Europe to this plant in the 18th century. The specific epithet julibrissin is a distorted gul-i abrisham ( Pers. گل ابریشم ), which means “silk flower” in Farsi (from gul گل - “flower”, abrisham ابریش - “silk”).

Morphological description

Lankaran Albification Sheet

The height of the tree is 6–9 (up to 16) meters [4] . It has a sprawling, or mostly umbrella, openwork crown [5] [6] with a width of 6-7 meters.

Inflorescence (macro)

The leaves are unpaired, two-leaved, open-ended, consisting of 9-15 lobes, each of which contains 15-30 pairs of leaflets sitting on the secondary petiole; leaflets dark green above, whitish below. The length of the sheet reaches 20 centimeters. In hot weather and at night, the leaves are folded along the midrib, and the whole complex leaf wilts. In winter, the albition sheds leaves [5] [7] .

It blooms in May – August [8] [9] . The flowers are yellowish-white, marginal fruitless - staminate, central bisexual, possess 5-ray symmetry, gathered in the corymboid panicles . Long, pink or white stamens [5] .

The fruits of albition are flat, multi-seeded beans , green in their youth, in adult states of straw yellow or brownish color with a length of 10–20 cm [7] [5] . Seeds are elongated oval, flat, dull, brown or brown, 6–7 mm long [5] .

The tree grows quickly, lives 50-100 years.

Dissemination and ecology

The natural range of the plant covers several regions.

  • Western Asia : Iran , Turkey , the south-east of Azerbaijan .
  • East Asia : China , North Korea , South Korea , Japan ( Hokkaido , Honshu , Kyushu , etc.), Taiwan [5] [4] [10] .
  • Indian subcontinent : Bhutan , India , Nepal , Pakistan .
  • Southeast Asia : Myanmar [11] .

On the territory of the former USSR it grows in the native wild form in the lower mountain belt (up to 200 m) of the Talysh Mountains in the south of Azerbaijan.

Use

Lankaran Albitia is widespread in culture, including in the extreme south of Russia and in the south of Ukraine. Albizia as a whole is a thermophilic subtropical plant. In some years there were cases of its freezing even in Tbilisi and Baku . At the same time, over the long decades of acclimatization in more northern latitudes, the albition quite successfully adapted itself to the growth north of subtropical landscapes , becoming one of the most winter-hardy subtropical species. For example, the albition can be found in the residential areas of Krasnodar , the village of Vityazevo north of Anapa, where there are no other subtropical plants. On the southern coast of the Crimea, this tree in general successfully reproduces by self-sowing [12] . It grows well in Sevastopol [13] . It is grown in the south of Central Asia in Turkmenistan , Uzbekistan ( Tashkent , Samarkand ) and in the south of Kazakhstan in Shymkent [5] . Grown in Western and Southern Europe : Italy , France , Greece and Albania . In the 20th century, it was also acclimatized in many places in the southern half of the United States [5] . In China, it is cultivated from Yunnan and Fujian in the south to Gansu and Liaoning in the north [4] .

Without damage, it withstands temperatures up to –15 –16 ° C, at –18 ° C young shoots are damaged, and at –20 –22 ° C, the main branches of the crown are affected [5] [6] . At a temperature of -20 ° C for more than 10 days and the absence of snow cover, the entire above-ground part freezes [14] .

Good honey plant . Albitia bark was used for dyeing in brown and yellow colors of wool and silk. Dense wood with a beautiful pattern is well polished.

Classification

Two varieties are described:

  • Albizia julibrissin Durazz. var. julibrissin
  • Albizia julibrissin Durazz. var. mollis ( Wall. ) Benth.
