He headed the Department of Soil Chemistry from 1980 to 1999. Deputy Dean for Research ( 1967 - 1970 and 1977 - 1984 ).

Biography

He graduated from the Biology and Soil Faculty of Moscow State University in 1952 .

He defended his thesis on " Cationic exchange and salt composition of the liquid phase of the soil " in 1955 and his doctoral thesis " Humic acid of the soil" in 1973 .

The scientific activity of D. S. Orlova covers mainly two main areas: the study of humic acids (their nature, properties and role in soil formation) and the spectral reflectivity of soils. He created a new theory of the formation of humic substances, revealed quantitative patterns of reflection of light by soils, developed the concept of forming thermodynamically stable components of the soil. Under his leadership, defended about 60 master's theses.

For 20 years, I lectured on Soil Chemistry, a special course on the biogeochemistry of organic matter.

For a long time he was a member of the editorial board of the journal Soil Science ( 1978-1999 ), deputy chairman of the editorial board of the journal Biological Sciences, until 2000 he was the chairman of the educational and methodological council of the faculty of soil science, chairman of the II commission of the Dokuchaevsky society of soil scientists.

Twice winner of them. MV Lomonosov ( 1978 , 1990 ), winner of the Prize. V. R. Williams ( 1986 ), Prizes of the Government of the Russian Federation ( 1996 ), State Prizes in the field of science and technology ( 2001 ).

For fruitful scientific and teaching activities, he was awarded the medals "For Valiant Labor" ( 1970 ), "Veteran of Labor" ( 1986 ), "In Memory of the 850th Anniversary of Moscow" ( 1997 ), with a medal - badge "For Excellent Success in Work" ( 1967 ), a gold medal to them. K. K. Gedroyts ( 1983 ), gold and silver medal of the Exhibition of Economic Achievements ( 1987 , 1988 ), jubilee badge “250 years of Moscow State University. MV Lomonosov, "Certificate of Merit of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR ( 1980 ).

He has published over 600 scientific papers, including more than 20 monographs and textbooks. The monographs Soil Humic Acids ( 1974 ), Soil Humic Acids and the General Theory of Humification ( 1990 ) and the textbook Soil Chemistry ( 1985 , 1992 ) have been translated into English . In recent years, he has published with his co-authors the monographs “Organic Matter of Soils of the Russian Federation” ( 1996 ) and “Spectral reflectance of soils and their components” ( 2001 ); textbooks "Biogeochemistry" ( 2000 ) and "Ecology and protection of the biosphere during chemical pollution" ( 2002 ).
