The young widow of General Voinitseva Anna Petrovna, her stepson Sergei Pavlovich Voinitsev and his wife Sofya Yegorovna live on the estate at a rural school. Voynicev’s neighbors Ivan Triletsky, his son Nikolai Ivanovich, candidate of rights Gerasim Kuzmich Petrin, retired guard cornet Pavel Petrovich Shcherbuk, their best friend Porfiry Semenovich Glagoliev, his son Kirill, rich Jew Abram Abramovich Vengerovich, his son Isaac, merchant Timofey come to the estate Gordeivich Bugrov and twenty-year-old companion of Triletsky Mary Efimovna Grekova. A teacher at the local school is Mikhail Vasilievich Platonov, who is married to the daughter of Colonel Triletsky Sasha.

At first, during a game of chess, Anna Petrovna convinces Triletsky to either marry Grekova or not touch her at all. In response, Triletsky convinces the general that she will not go to her, as Platonov goes to her, whom she hates because he inflicted a public insult on her. Glagoliev, who listened to all this conversation, also joins them and, together with them and Voinitsev, talks about everything interesting. Despite this, Grekova comes to the estate and, seeing Platonov there, is offended even worse. Platonov tries to talk to her, but nothing comes of it. Triletsky warns him to be careful. Sofya Egorovna, not yet knowing who is pursuing her, wants to find out everything about Platonov and that he is the owner of a neighboring estate. Shcherbuk on arrival expresses to the neighbors about everything that has boiled in his soul, and wants to share this with Petrin.

Glagoliev’s son Cyril comes from Paris and scandalizes his father for not sending him money. In response, Glagoliev convinces his son that twenty-five thousand will be enough for him. Voynitsev convinces Platonov that Glagoliev will buy his estate, since he recently offered him his deal. And for the deal to go well, he will need to marry the general. Anna Petrovna also has a lot of trouble, but in order to marry Glagoliev, she needs to solve something with the estate. In addition, she has mines, and Vengerovich and the merchant Bugrov are claiming them.

Triletsky does not know what these letters mean to S.V., inscribed on the gazebo, and believes that they are intended for Voinitsev in order to respect them with himself or his spouse. Platonov, on the contrary, means that these letters mean "Glory to Vengerovich," since he invested so much money to sell the mine-generals. Glagoliev, realizing that Voynitsev had started all this in vain, informs Anna Petrovna that he is giving up her husband's rights. Anna Petrovna convinces him that she has only friendly feelings with him.

Platonov finds his first love in Sophia. Sofya Yegorovna, realizing that it was he who was pursuing her, convinced Platonov to leave her alone. However, the estate is commanded by the small horse-drawn Osip, who is burning with the desire to kill Platonov. First, he asks for money from Vengerovich, and then wants to talk about him with Sasha. Platonov comes intoxicated. He understands that he offended Sasha with all this, but she does not suspect anything.

Voynitsev’s servant Katya brings Platonov a letter from Sofia Egorovna. Platonov understands that Sophia really loves him, but he cannot leave Sasha. Sofya Egorovna, having parted with her husband, decides to leave with Platonov, but finds him drunk. Glagoliev and Cyril leave the estate. Voynitsev, realizes that Platonov wants to take his wife from him, decides to leave his estate with his mother. Osip killed by men. A scandal erupts in the family. Triletsky brings Platonov a note and informs him that Sasha was trying to commit suicide. Grekova understands her mistake, and now she has a close relationship with Platonov.

Sofya Egorovna, realizing that Platonov betrayed her, shoots him. Platonov dies from his wounds.
