Peter Olof Swartz was born in Norrkoping in 1760 . Since 1778 he studied at Uppsala University . In 1785 he received a doctorate in medicine. [four]
In 1783-1787 traveled to the Caribbean and collected up to 800 new plants on the islands of Jamaica and Haiti . As a result of this trip, he published the compositions “Nova Genera et Species Plantarum seu Prodromus” (1788), “Observationes botanicae” (1791) and “Flora Indiae occidentalis” (1797-1806). [3] [5]
I. Kh. Schreber named the genus of plants Swartzia from the legume family in honor of Swartz. [3]
Since 1806, Swartz served as the curator of the collection, and since 1811 - the secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . [four]
He died in Stockholm in 1818 . [four]
