Dikika is a region in Afar ( Ethiopia ), located in the Avash Valley , 400 km northeast of Addis Ababa , the capital of Ethiopia.

During archaeological excavations in the Dikika area in 2000, the Ethiopian paleoanthropologist Zeresenai Alemseged a find of a fosillized skull and fragments of the postcranial skeleton of a 3-year-old female hominid of the female genus belonging to the species Australopithecus afar , about 3.3 million years old, was made. The find, remarkable for its integrity and good preservation, was called Selam . [one]
