Anorthosite

Anorthosite (from fr. Anorthose - plagioclase) is a magmatic plutonic basic normal alkaline rock of the gabbroid family . As a rule, it has a dense, massive texture, the color varies from light gray to almost black.. It consists mainly of primary and medium plagioclase ( Labrador , bitovnita , anorthite ). In addition to plagioclase, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, olivine , ilmenite , titanomagnetite and other minerals are often found in anorthosites. . Usually has a large and giant grain structure .

Material composition

Most of the major anorthositic complexes of the Earth were formed over 1 billion years ago ( Ukraine , Canada , Finland ), often together with granites, rapakivi. They are also part of stratified intrusions of the main-ultrabasic composition ( South Africa , Australia , Canada and others) . Deposits of titanium , chromium , and platinoids are associated with anorthosite magmatic complexes. . A known and common type of anorthosite is labradorite. . Labradorites iridescent in blue and blue tones are widely used as a facing and decorative ornamental stone. .

Anorthosites are one of the main rocks that make up part of the lunar surface "lunar continents" .

Content

Etymology

The breed is named for the French word anorthose - plagioclase.

Study History

In the USSR and Russia, the largest researcher of anorthosites is the scientist, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences O. A. Bogatikov . In 1975, he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences on the topic "Anorthosites of the USSR." In 1979, the scientist prepared and published the fundamental monograph “Anorthosites” .
