Stockholm archipelago

The archipelago stretches 60 km east of Stockholm . From south to north, the archipelago stretched along the coasts of the provinces of Södermanland and Uppland . The southernmost island of the Ey archipelago, the north is Veddё . From the east, the islands are separated from the Åland Islands by the South Quarken Strait. In total, the archipelago has about 24,000 islands, islets and cliffs, the largest of which are Vermde , Grinda , Ingaryo , Iso , Möya , Nemde , Rödlög , Svartsø , Tünniigö , Utyo , Finnhamn , Husaryo and Usterö .

All shipping lines from the Baltic to Stockholm pass through the archipelago. There are three main passages for deep-sea vessels - Landsort, Sandhamn and Soderarm.

History

The landscape of the islands during the Vikings was completely different, since then it has changed a lot and continues to change today thanks to the annual increase of land by 5 mm. In 1719, the population of the archipelago was about 2900 people - mostly fishermen. Today, the archipelago is a popular holiday destination, mainly among residents of Stockholm. To preserve the unique nature and culture of the islands, the Stockholm Archipelago Foundation was established, which owns approximately 15% of its territory.
