Domestic pigeons are different in color, body shape, pattern and plumage structure, flying abilities. Conditionally for practical use, all domestic pigeons are divided into four main groups:

- Decorative
- Flight - Racing
- Meat
When assessing standards at international European pigeon shows, the German classification of 1978 is usually applied, namely:
- Shaped
- Warty
- Chicken
- Dutysh
- Colored
- Drummers
- Structural
- Owls
- Turmans and High Race
In 1982 , the leading pigeon breeders of the Moscow club, taking into account the main features inherent in a number of breeds of pigeons of domestic origin, divided them into 7 groups:
- Clean
- Short-billed Turmans
- Race
- High flying
- Slaughter
- Drummers
- Stately
- Winged
- Kachuns
- Single color
- Motley
- Shaking
- Color-sided
- Color chest
- Color-tailed
In Russia, the famous ornithologist Professor S. Petofi divides the breeds into 12 groups:
- Simple (sisari)
- Field or color
- Giants
- Chicken
- Drummers
- Curly
- Jacobins
- Peacocks
- Seagulls
- Dutysh
- Warty
- Flight and somersaults
The pigeon breeders of the Czech Republic and Slovakia have their own conventional classification, which provides for the division of all breeds of domestic pigeons into 8 groups:
- Useful
- Large
- Chicken
- Datysh (large, medium, small)
- Decorative (colored, seagulls, drummers, structural)
- Warty
- Flying (Turmans - Short-billed, Middle-billed, Long-billed)
- Sports (postal)
