Early life

Malignaggi was born in the Sicilian region of Brooklyn in a family of Italian immigrants. His father left him at the age of six, and returned to Sicily. For reasons known only to himself, he took the nickname “Magic Man” (Wizard).

Paul had a short but successful amateur career, and in 2001 he won the US title in 132 lbs.

Professional career

He made his debut in July 2001 in the light weight category. He held 18 successful win-win rating matches against little-known boxers, and in December 2004 he defeated Mexican Sandro Casamonica and won the intercontinental WBC world title in the second lightweight category.

In June 2006, Malignaggi suffered his first defeat, losing on points to the Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Angel Cotto in the fight for the WBO world title.

In June 2007, Paul Malignaggi met with the Bahamian Edner Cherry . Malignaggi was superior to his opponent in speed and accuracy of punches. He won on points by a unanimous decision.

IBF World Lightweight Championship Championships

In June 2007, Paul Malignaggi entered the ring against the IBF World Welterweight Champion Lovemore Ndu . The challenger dominated the whole battle. N'Dou constantly stepped forward, but his punches often went past the target, and Malignaggi worked on waste, throwing accurate punches. In the middle of the 6th round, the referee took a point from the champion for a blow to the back of the head. In the middle of the 9th round, Malignaggi threw a right hook into the opponent's head. N'Dou fell on the canvas, but immediately rose. HBO commentators called it a flash knockdown. At the end of 12 rounds, the judges with a crushing score lost the victory to Malignaggi.

November 22, 2008 in Las Vegas, USA, a duel took place between two former world welterweight champions - Briton Ricky Hatton and American Paul Malignaggi. Hatton looked faster than his rival and immediately seized the initiative. Malignaggi tried to meet Hatton, but he did not succeed, and several times the American was on the verge of knockdown after Hatton's left side, and was forced to seek salvation in the clinch. In general, throughout the fight, Hatton had an obvious advantage, delivering precise blows to his opponent over and over again, while Malignaggi clinched a lot, retreated and practically did not attack the Briton. In the eleventh round, after another successful Hatton attack, coach Malignaggi Buddy McGirt stopped the fight by throwing a towel.

WBA Welterweight Championships

On April 29, 2012 in Donetsk (Ukraine) a duel took place between Vyacheslav Senchenko and Paul Malignaggi. The fight was very competitive, the rivals dealt each other very powerful blows, hematoma formed under Senchenko’s eye, and the Ukrainian’s eye swam. But Senchenko could knock down Malignaggi. Paul missed a lot of hard shots, but still managed to stay on his feet until round 9. The referee announced that the 9th round would be the last round, since Vyacheslav would not be able to continue the fight with such a hematoma. Senchenko failed to prematurely end the fight, and as a result, Paul Malignaggi won by TKO. And won the WBA World Champion title .

In the summer of 2013, in a competitive battle, Malignaggi lost the title with a separate referee's decision to the unbroken American Avenue Adrian Broner .

December 7, 2013 won on points the former absolute world champion, American, Zab Judah .
