The original candidacy for the role of Atticus Finch was actor Rock Hudson .
Philip Alford, who played Jim, did not want to go try on the role. And only after his mother said that in this case he could legally skip school, he agreed.
The courthouse interior is an exact copy of the courthouse interior from Harper Lee 's hometown of Montreville , Alabama . Photographers from Universal Studios specially went there before filming.
During one of the opening scenes, Harper Lee visited the set. The scene of Atticus Finch returning home caused tears in her - so Peck looked like her father. By the way, Finch is the middle name of Lee's father.
