History
The exhibition was held on March 19, 1988 in Taganrog , in the Palace of Culture of the local defense plant "Priboy" . The exhibition-session (the name “One-Day Exhibition” appeared later) was organized on the initiative of the Oktyabrsky District Committee of the Komsomol of Taganrog and young artists of Taganrog and Rostov-on-Don [1] .
The secretary of the October RK VLKSM Taganrog Oleg Kobyakov , deciding administrative issues on the organization of the youth art exhibition, invited Yuri Shabelnikov to form a circle of participants. Shabelnikov attracted his Rostov-Taganrog friends and colleagues in the person of Avdei Ter-Oganyan , Valery Koshlyakov , Nikolai Konstantinov , Alexander Kislyakov , Natalia Duritskaya , Leonid Stukanov and others. Since the RK VLKSM placed an advertisement for the upcoming exhibition in the regional youth newspaper “Komsomolets” , a number of participants also received a number of artists “by gravity” [2] . “Officially” the authors were allowed to participate in the exhibition under the fulfillment of three conditions: living on the territory of the Rostov region, age - not more than 35 years, and also - “the work must be experimental” [2] . The authors were given the right to submit no more than three works [2] .

Since the overwhelming majority of participants in this exhibition was in the art group "Bugbear", which was later transformed into the " Art or Death " group, this exhibition is considered to be the first official exhibition of the " Art or Death " [4] [5] .
During the discussion, which took place in one of the large rooms of the recreation center, towards the end of the opening day of the exhibition, the aggressively disposed and irritated spectators attacked the artists, accusing them of being unprofessional. The situation was saved by Rostov art historian A.P. Tokarev , whose performance turned out to be the only professional and fully analytical analysis.

Interesting Facts
- In 2006 the exhibition “ Art or death. Twenty years later . It is curious that since that time the audience has not undergone any noticeable qualitative changes in terms of competence. Moreover, the orthodox fundamentalism that has gained strength over the past decades has sprung its shoots: activists and representatives of the ROC have distinguished themselves with the greatest intolerance and aggressiveness. Artist Sigutin , for example, was beaten by a religious fan at the entrance to the Museum of Modern Art at Dmitrovskaya , where the exhibition was held [6] [7] [8] . A number of works were removed from the exhibition at the request of the administrators of the local Diocese , speaking on behalf of the parishioners, whose religious feelings were allegedly offended [7] .
- In June 2008 , the exhibition “ On Mortal in Art ” took place in the Gallery “M” ( Rostov-on-Don ), in which 20 years later, almost all participants of the “ Art or Death ” association “met” with their works [9] [10 ] [11] .
