Biography

He first studied music with his father, Paul Bruns, who served as an organist in Schwabstedt . He later studied composition under the direction of Dietrich Buxtehude . With the assistance of Buxtehude, he received the position of court violinist and composer in Copenhagen . In 1689-97, the city organist of Husum .

During his lifetime, he was known mainly as an organist, but also played the violin, accompanying himself on the organ pedal keyboard. Composed spiritual cantatas, organ music.

Johann Sebastian Bach spoke highly of Bruns, according to his son, Carl Philip Emanuel .
