Establishment of a society. Initial Goals
Background
In 1928, Herman Wirth published the book “The Origin of Humanity”, in which he claimed that there are two proto-races at the origins of humanity: the “Nordic”, which is the spiritual race from the North, and the aliens from the southern continent of Gondwana , gripped by base instincts, the race of the South. In the book, he said that animals are a special kind of creature that, in principle, is different from a person. He opposed a highly spiritual person and a human beast, which is not only non-human (like ordinary animals), but also an anti-human. The reason for the destructive processes in the society of the Nordic race (“Hyperboreans”), according to Virt , was the racial mixture of the Hyperboreans with the dumb and primitive beast-like creatures that inhabited another continent - Gondwana (his views were the scientific basis for the Nazis to conduct so-called “ racial hygiene ” in the future) .
Creatures from the South parodied the language, because they used language concepts to subordinate them to the rough specifics of things. Their language was an anti-language, and instead of thinking and raising a specific subject to an idea, the thought of human beings turns into a distortion of intellectual proportions, into the cause of a mental illness - it is an anti-thought when they worship the fetish subject itself, or even a satanic anti-god, or this intellectual degeneration can lead to materialism, the world of objects. He calls such creatures human objects [1] .
Society Creation
The roots of Anenerbe should be sought both in the activities of the esoteric society “Thule” and in the hypotheses and ideas of a number of individuals, such as the scholar Herman Wirth and the occultist Friedrich Hilscher (mentor of the future Secretary General of “Anenerbe” Zievers ). Hielscher talked with Swedish researcher Sven Gedin , a former Oriental specialist who had been in Tibet for a long time, as well as with Professor C. Haushofer (a professor at the University of Munich, whose assistant was young Rudolf Hess ). Hess introduced Haushofer to Hitler , who was fascinated by the idea of conquering living space , various occult-mystical constructions and hypotheses [2] .
A follower of Haushofer's theory of living space was also a friend of Alfred Rosenberg, Alexander Nikuradze , an ideologist created by the Polish authorities in 1925, the Prometheus society. It was his ideas, in addition to the works of Houston Chamberlain , that had a special influence on the theory of the German race aimed at finding Nazi allies in Europe, the Middle East, India and the USSR, and it was he who considered the war with the USSR necessary for the final solution of the Russian question using resources and Russophobic forces of Eastern Europe, ideologically oversaw the national and racial policies of the Third Reich . This radically contradicted the opinion of Haushofer, who opposed the war with the USSR, for the creation of the axis Berlin-Rome-Moscow-Tokyo and the development of the territories of limitrophes as the living space of the Germans [3] [4] [5] . She was also influenced by the numerous works of Elena Blavatsky and, in particular, the so-called " racial theories " (about the existence of higher and lower races) contained in her Secret Doctrine .
In 1935, a historical exhibition entitled “The Legacy of German Ancestors” was held in Munich , organized by Wirth, who was a professor who defended a thesis on Dutch songs entitled “The Degradation of Dutch Folk Songs”, where he invents his protomythology as the author of the so-called “ Hyperborean "Concept.
This concept of the existence of anti-people with anti-language and anti-thoughts interested the anti - Semitic- minded Heinrich Himmler , who visited this exhibition. In 1935, Himmler became president and authorized representative of the Ancestral Heritage organization. An interest in the exhibition was also shown by the racist, who was educated as a colonialist-agronomist (for the colonization of Africa), Richard Darre and the pagan occultist Friedrich Hilscher , who enjoyed great authority in the NSDAP , not being a member of this party.
Thus, from the very beginning, the Anenerbe society was associated with future Nazi leaders.
But during a major rally of the National Socialist Party in September 1936, Adolf Hitler sharply criticized Anenerbe’s first leader German Wirth, saying: “We have nothing to do with people who understand nationalism only as a set of legends and myths and as a result are too easy to replace his vague phrases of Nordic content. Now they are starting to conduct research based on the mythical culture of the Atlanteans . ”
But Himmler thought differently - he wanted to free Nazi Germany from Catholicism . To achieve this goal, he did his best to maintain close friendly relations with Karl-Maria Wiligut , a former colonel of the Austrian imperial army, a former patient in a psychiatric hospital, who at the age of 67 declared that he was a descendant of the deity of the northern peoples of Thor and had secret knowledge of ancient Germanic tribes [6] .
In 1936, Wiligut, along with Gunther Kirhoff , began excavations at the Anenerbe Institute within the Murg hill in the Black Forest near Baden-Baden , where, in his opinion, the ruins of an ancient settlement of irminists, followers of the ancient German religion, were located. Ancient occult rocks of Externstein were also explored.
Reichsfuhrer SS Himmler officially accepted the disgraced Anenerbe as part of the SS [ when? ] . Initially, Anenerbe was part of the Main Directorate of Race and Settlement . In 1937 , Himmler dismissed Wirth, who served as president of the organization, and handed “Anenerbe” to the Inspection of Concentration Camps [7] . This was due to the criticism of Wirth as a scientist, on the one hand, and the failure of his idea of the origin of the Aryans from the Atlanteans in the eyes of the Führer - on the other. Himmler used this opportunity to subjugate the Heritage of the Ancestors organization to the structure of the SS and increase his influence. Sivers, as a person with a university education, had to play the role of a link between scientists and the SS Reichsfuhrer. The head of medical programs is August Hirt . Walter Wust took over as president. However, two years later, in 1939, the posts of Wüst and Himmler switched places - Himmler became President Ahnenerbe, and Wüst became curator .
January 1, 1939 "Anenerbe" received the status of an independent organization with the expansion of rights and the provision of additional funding [7] . The Anenerbe headquarters was located in the Villa Wurmbach mansion ( German: Villa Wurmbach ) in the Dahlem district of Berlin (at ).
The original goal of the Ancestral Heritage Society was to prove the theory of racial superiority of the Germans (in all the official documents of the NSDAP and the laws of Nazi Germany there was only the term "German race" (or "Indo-German race"), the terms "Aryan race", "Aryans" were only in spoken language and in the writings of the predecessors of the Nazis) through historical, anthropological and archaeological research. The 1935 program also said [8] : “Researches in the field of localization of the spirit, deeds, and inheritance of the Indo-Germanic race. Popularization of research results in an accessible and interesting way for the general public. The work is carried out in full compliance with scientific methods and scientific accuracy. "
On January 1, 1942 , Anenerbe was transferred to the Personal Headquarters of the Reichsfuhrer SS [7] and all its activities were finally reoriented to military needs. Many projects were curtailed, but the Institute for Military Research , led by Sievers, arose. Subsequently, the activities of the institute were examined in detail at the Nuremberg trials : an international tribunal recognized the “Heritage of the Ancestors” as a criminal organization, and its head Sivers was sentenced to death and hanged.

The Ancestral Heritage Library was located in Oberaichlberg Castle near Ulm . The librarian was Annegret Schmidt.
The company also conducted archaeological research in Kafiristan , Tibet , as well as on the Channel Islands, in Romania , Bulgaria , Croatia , Poland , Greece and other European countries.
Financing
Initially, funding was through the Richard Darre Ministry of Agriculture. With the transition to the SS , the financing scheme changed: “... the company was financed through the following channels: the German Society for Scientific Research, membership dues, and the provision of funds from the Reich. Funds from the SS troops and from the armed forces were made available to the institute only on military research issues ” [11] .
Since 1935, a circle of influential industrialists and bankers has formed around Himmler, the so-called " circle of friends of the Reichsführer SS ", which regularly donated money to SS projects (including Anenerbe), in return receiving numerous privileges (including expropriated Jewish property and prison labor )
One of the largest contributions, approximately 50,000 Reichsmarks, came from the German Bank, as well as from BMW and Daimler-Benz .
In July 1940, Hitler approved the state plan for the reconstruction of Wewelsburg . The reconstruction of the castle was supposed to last 20 years at a cost of 250 million Reichsmarks, which is 1 billion 250 million dollars at today's rate.
Science and Ideology
In Wewelsburg Castle, Himmler intended to establish a center of the Nazi "new religion", which was created by SS ideologists as a combination of paganism of the ancient Germans and the "true" Christianity and occultism of the last century, which had not yet been "poisoned by Jews". The "Grail" of the castle was under a huge dome, it had 48 windows and was intended for religious meditations of the Reichsfuhrer and people close to power.
From the first days of the organization's existence, archaeologists, ethnographers, philologists, and historians filmed propaganda films for the SS and wrote educational programs. Without fail, each member of the SS was taught the epic "Edda" and taught to read the runes .
Within the walls of the Anenerbe, the question of Atlantis was often raised, and Himmler was interested in it. It was in this institute that the name Helgoland was coined: “das heilige Land” - “holy land”. The ideologists of National Socialism sought to give the German “principles” an independent color, which would allow the Nazis to feel their exclusivity, which did not owe anything to Abraham . After the war, Nazi ideas were picked up by Pastor Jurgen Spanut, who identified Atlantis with Helgoland [12] .
Employees of the Ancestral Heritage organization lectured to Sonderkommando fighters and the concentration camp guards to "scientifically" substantiate the total destruction of the enemies of the Millennium Reich . One of the world's best cultural and Viking specialists, Dr. Herbert Yankun , argued that the ancient Germans mercilessly drowned traitors, homosexuals and apostates in the swamps, along with their families. After the German army conquered Crimea in July 1942 , Himmler sent Dr. Yankun , as well as Karl Kersten and Baron von Seefeld, to the region in search of the remains of the material culture of the Gothic kingdom (which were never found). In the future, Crimea was to be completely resettled ("no foreigners") and colonized only by the Germans, becoming the territory of the Reich. The future Crimean colony was named Gotengau (Gothic district), in honor of the Goths, who, as Yankun believed, were the ancestors of German "Aryans" [13] . Dr. Yankun paid special attention to the looting of the Crimean museum. A little later, he asked to be enlisted as an intelligence officer in the SS Viking division, where he had previously carried out "cultural and political education."

According to Himmler, the "ariization" of the region should have been gradual over the course of 20 years; at first it was supposed to deport the local population, then redistribute the territory for the settlement of the "Aryan race". In addition to the “exclusion” of the Slavs and the “lower” races, it was planned to plant oak and beech trees in order to copy traditional German forests, as well as plant new crops that were brought from Tibet, another homeland of the “Aryans”. Himmler orders the creation of a new institution in the Ancestral Heritage structure, led by Schäfer. Then a biological station was created near the Austrian city of Graz , where Schaefer begins to work with seven other scientists to develop new crops for the Millennium Reich.
The full implementation of the “Ariization” plan became impossible due to the ongoing war, but a small colony was founded in the field headquarters of Himmler, [14] near Kiev . On October 10, 1942, CC troops, led by Himmler, deported 10,623 Ukrainians in livestock cars before moving ethnic Germans ( Volksdeutsche ) from northern Ukraine [15] . The SS transferred the necessary materials, as well as land, to German families.
Runes and their meanings in the Third Reich
Two runes “Zig” formed the name of our SS. The dead head , the swastika and the Hagal rune demonstrate an unshakable confidence in the final victory of our philosophy.G. Himmler
“... Great gods - Odin, Ve and Willy carved a man from ash and a woman from willow. The eldest of Bohr's children, Odin, breathed soul into people and gave life. To give them new knowledge, Odin went to Utgarde, the Land of Evil, to the World Tree. There he pulled out his eye and sacrificed it, but this did not seem enough to the Guardians of the Tree. Then he gave his life - he decided to die in order to resurrect. For nine days he hung on a bitch pierced by a spear. Each of the eight nights of Initiation revealed to him new secrets of being. On the ninth morning, Odin saw letter runes traced on a stone. His mother’s father, the giant Beltorn, taught him how to carve and paint runes, and the World Tree has since become known as Yggdrasil ... ”
This is how the Snorrieva Edda (1222–1225) tells about the acquisition of runes by the ancient Germans, perhaps the only complete review of the heroic epic of the ancient Germans, based on legends, divination, incantations, sayings, religious and religious rites of the Germanic tribes. In "Edda" Odin was revered as the god of war and the patron saint of the dead heroes of Valhalla . He was considered a magician and a necromancer.
Runes and runic letters are signs of the ancient Germanic alphabet , carved on stone, metal and bone, and have become widespread mainly in Northern Europe. Each rune had a name and magical meaning that went beyond the purely linguistic framework. The style and composition changed over time and acquired magical significance in Teutonic astrology .
It is only natural that Heinrich Himmler , who from a young age showed an increased interest in the spiritual world of “Nordic ancestors” and sincerely considered himself the reincarnation of the founder of the First Reich, Heinrich Ptitselov , who was elected king of all Germans in 919, could not pass by the “Aryan heritage” that fits perfectly in his worldview. According to the plan of the Reichsführer SS, the runes had a special role to play in the symbolism of the SS : on his personal initiative, the Runic Writing Institute was established within the framework of the Anenerbe program, the Society for the Study and Dissemination of the Cultural Heritage of the Ancestors.
Until 1939, all members of the SS apparatus studied the meanings of runes as part of a general training course. Until 1945, 14 runes were actively used in the SS, but already in 1940 the compulsory study of runes was canceled, which gave the runes even more mystery.
Hakenkreuz
Swastika is one of the oldest ideographic symbols. The name comes from the two-syllable Sanskrit word meaning "welfare" in the translation. It is a regular equilateral cross with "broken" ends at right angles. It symbolizes the infinity of existence and the cyclical nature of rebirth. As the emblem of "racial purity of the Aryan nation" was first used in Germany on the eve of the First World War . After 1918, was depicted on the regimental and divisional standards of the " freikor ", for example, the Erhard brigade . In August 1920, Hitler used a right-handed swastika to design a party banner and subsequently compared his insight with the “burst bomb effect”. The swastika has become a symbol of the NSDAP and the Third Reich . This symbol was often used by both the SS troops and the SS apparatus, including the German SS, for example, SS formations in Flanders.
Sonnerad
“Zonnerad”, “sun wheel” or “solar swastika” is an Old Norse sign, a symbol of thunder, fire and fertility of Aryan magicians and sorcerers. In the SS troops, Zonnerad was the emblem of the Viking volunteer motorized division, and regiment and later of the SS Nordland division of troops, most of which were natives of Scandinavia. The “solar swastika” was also used in the symbolism of the Schalburg corps , which was the Danish formation of the SS apparatus.
Siegrune
Rune "Zig", an attribute of the god of war Thor . A sign of power, energy, struggle and death. In 1933, the SS Hauptsturmfuhrer Walter Heck, a graphic artist in the workshop of Ferdinand Hofstatter in Bonn , designing a new badge layout, combined the two Sieg runes. The expressive lightning shape impressed Himmler, who chose the “double lightning” emblem of the SS. For the possibility of using the mark, the budgetary and financial department of the SS paid the copyright holder a fee of 2.5 (?) Reichsmarks. In addition, Heck developed the CA emblem, combining the runic “S” and the Gothic “A”.
Gerrune
The rune "Ger", a symbol of collectivism and comradely mutual assistance reigning in the ranks of the SS, was used in one of the variants of the division standard of the 11th motorized volunteer division of the SS Troops "Nordland" .
Wolfsangel
Fleece "Wolfsangel", "wolf hook" - a pagan amulet that protected its owner from the machinations of "dark forces" and giving power over the werewolf - werewolf. In medieval heraldry, it meant the “wolf trap” - reliable protection. In the XV century it became the emblem of the townspeople who fought with the mercenaries of the German princes. This is the oldest symbol of freedom and independence, known since the Thirty Years War and as the "Sign of arbitrariness." Currently preserved on the coat of arms of the German city of Wolfstein. The Wolfsangel was originally the emblem of the NSDAP, and in the SS Forces it was used as divisional emblems of some tank units, for example, the SS tank division of the Reich .
Wolfsangel (2nd option)
Emblem BA (Weer Afdeelingen) - the Dutch equivalent of the NSDAP. Badge of members of the German SS in the Netherlands. It was later used in the design of the triumphal standard of the 34th SS Volunteer Infantry Division Landstorm Nederland .
Opferrune
The rune "Ofer", a symbol of self-sacrifice. After 1918, this rune was used by war veterans as a sign of belonging to the Steel Helmet. Later, a memorial sign with the rune “Ofer” was issued in honor of the so-called “martyrs on November 9th” - 16 Hitler supporters who were killed by police during the “Beer putsch” in 1923. It was also used as an element of graphic design for wound patches (SA ) and disabled SS.
Eifrune
Rune "Ayf", a symbol of determination and enthusiasm. A sign of special forces of the SS, in particular, Hitler’s personal adjutants and especially close persons. A tunic with an eifruna in 1929 was worn by Rudolf Hess .
Lebenrune
The rune of "Life" - such signs were worn on uniforms by participants of the selection program "Lebensborn SS" - "Source of Life" developed by Himmler. It was used in SS sfragistika and paperwork: the rune was affixed on personal documents and carved on tombstones of SS members to indicate the date of birth.
Totenrune
The rune "Toten", the sign of death - to indicate in documents and tombstones "the date of departure to the" Hall of the Dead "- in German mythology, it was called the Odin's palace, where the soldiers who fell in battle fall.
Tyrrune
The rune "Tire", a symbol of intransigence in the battle, an indispensable attribute of the god of war, thunder and fertility of Tire . The tombstone in the form of the Tire rune was installed on the graves of the SS men instead of the Christian cross. Sometimes she was tattooed under the left shoulder bend of the SS members together with the designation of the blood group .
The patch on the left sleeve of the uniform indicated the end of the officer “special school of the SA Reichsführer SS” (until 1934) and subsequently transformed into the badge of the SS department for the preparation of reserves. In the SS troops, it was used in the symbols of the 32nd SS Volunteer Infantry Division “January 30” , formed in February 1945 and staffed by the SS teaching and cadet schools.
Heilszeichen
Rune "Heilstsayhen", a symbol of success and good luck - elements of runic ornamentalism, in particular, were engraved on the SS award ring "Dead Head".
Hagallrune
The rune "Hagall", symbolized the inflexibility of faith (in the Nazi sense of the word), required from each member of the SS. This rune was widely used during various SS ceremonies, in particular at weddings. The SS troops were used in the symbols of the 6th SS Mountain Division "Nord" .
Odalrune
The rune "Odal", a symbol of family and consanguinity. The badge of the staff of the Main Directorate of the SS on race and settlement issues , as well as the emblem of the 7th Mountain Division of the SS Troops “Prince Eugen” , which became the first SS unit equipped exclusively with Volksdeutsche.
People as an Object of Research on Nazi Science
The use of the bodies of murdered people as material in an anthropological collection
With the entry of Germany into the war, an anthropological research program was brought to the fore among the developments of Anenerbe. This program was implemented by the Institute for Special Missions in the Field of Military Sciences, which used living people as experimental material. One such program was developed by the SS Hauptsturmführer Professor August Hirt . He collected skulls and skeletons of people of different nationalities, alcoholized bodies. People came from death camps as material.
Human Experiences
In addition to anthropological research, Anenerbe also engaged in inhumane experiments on people. Dr. Sigmund Rasher specialized in this area [11] [16] . He wrote to his boss Heinrich Himmler :
Auschwitz is more suitable for such tests than Dachau , since the climate in Auschwitz is somewhat colder, and also because experiments in this camp will attract less attention due to its larger area (subjects shout loudly when freezing.) [13]
When experiments to cool people at Auschwitz (better known in Russia as Auschwitz) failed for some reason, Dr. Rasher continued his research in Dachau:
Thank God, in Dachau, severe colds have again set in, he wrote to Himmler in the early spring of 1943. - Some subjects were outdoors for 14 hours at an external temperature of 21 ° F (−6.1 ° C), while body temperature dropped to 77 ° F (+25 ° C) and frostbite of the extremities was observed ... [13]
As people froze, Dr. Rasher or his assistant recorded temperature, heart function, breathing, etc. The silence of the night was often broken by the harrowing cries of the martyrs ... [13]
Ancestral Heritage and Germanic History
