Economics

The traditional center of tobacco production, the village was influenced by the crisis of the tobacco industry. Like other tobacco growing regions, the inhabitants of Shiroko-Pol are experimenting with alternative crops. In particular, the production of saffron [2] [3] , a new culture for the region, is growing. For planting saffron bulbs, specialized equipment is already used [3] .

Education

In the vicinity of the village there is a military training camp, founded in 1996 on the former mobilization base, then for the first time students of the eighth grade from Kardzhali were engaged in it [4] . Over time, samples of weapons, an anti-tank gun, and even a helicopter were put in the camp [4] . Over the years, about 60 thousand pupils have passed through the military training camp near the village of Shiroko-Pole, many of them work in the police, gendarmerie, and armed forces [4] . Students from grade 4 to grade 12 are admitted to the camp, all of them are learning to shoot from airguns.

Ecology

Shiroko-Pole is located east of the Lead-Zinc Plant in Kardzhali and falls into the zone of damage from the enterprise's harmful emissions. Over the years, the enterprise has accumulated significant concentrations of toxic substances (lead, cadmium, antimony, copper) in the soils of the city and the surrounding area (especially east of the plant) [5] . Cadmium was accumulated in livestock tissues (through a high content in vegetation), in the kidneys of cattle the cadmium content exceeded the norm by 8-10 times [6] .

There is a slight decrease in the concentration of lead and cadmium in feed in connection with the termination of the plant in 2012 [7] .
