The village of Cherven-Bryag is mentioned for the first time in the Ottoman tax register of 1430 as Jerven-Breg . In the middle of the XVI century it is registered as Dobrolyk . In the XVI century it is recorded in Ottoman documents as the village of Cherven-Bryag. The name, apparently, comes from the color of reddish clays found in the vicinity of the village.

The modern city was founded in 1899, three kilometers west of the village of the same name as a station on the railway under construction from Sofia to Varna [2] . With the opening of the road, the station became a center for trade in cereals, livestock and other agricultural products. By decree No. 402, on the report of Prime Minister Andrei Lyapchev on June 26, 1929, Cherven-Bryag station received city status. The city also included the old village of Cherven-Bryag, now known as the “Fifth Quarter - Eastern Zone”.

In the late 1960s, a large military plant for the production of armored personnel carriers and self-propelled artillery was built on the outskirts of the city - Machine-Building Plant May 9, later called Beta JSC. Broken ties between the countries of the former socialist camp led the plant to difficulties, in the end the joint-stock company was declared bankrupt in 2009.
