History
The settlement was founded by the Thracians in the II century. Then it was called Larisa, and in the XIV century it was renamed in honor of St. Vlas - the patron saint of merchants, livestock breeders, doctors. In the XIV-XVIII centuries, there was a monastery burned by pirates. In the XIV century, 4 more monasteries were located in the vicinity of the village: St. Peter, St. Elijah, St. Andrew (male) and St. Anna (female). Now Sveti Vlas is recognized as one of the “ oldest villages of the Nessebar community ”. During the years of Ottoman rule, several village names were recorded - and all of them are associated with monasteries. The Turks named it Kuchuk-Manastir, and in one of the registers it says: "the village of Manastir." This name is mentioned in his writings by the venerable researchers of Bulgarian antiquity - the Shkorpil brothers. In the XVIII century, all the aforementioned monasteries were destroyed, ruins remained.
After liberation in 1877-1878. the main massif of the Bulgarian lands, the Horn of the Old Planina became part of Eastern Rumelia , an artificial state entity. Since 1885 - as part of the Bulgarian Principality. The following year, 1886, Kuchuk-manastir was renamed Sveti Vlas.
For centuries and up to 1920, the local population was predominantly Greek. After a series of wars of 1912-1918. 79 Bulgarian families from Solunsky and 29 from Gyumyurdzhinsky regions were settled in Sveti Vlas [2] . In 1914, 20 families of Asia Minor Bulgarians settled here from the village of Yeni-koy (near the city of Bandirma , North-Western Anatolia). Also, one family from Bulgar-koy , Adrianople (Odrin) and Babchor settled here ; one family from Tsigarev later moved to Nessebar [3] .
In the early 1920s, local Greeks moved to Western Thrace, transferred to Greece in 1920 [4] . Only 10 Greek families remained in Sveti Vlas after 1920.
In 1924, Macedonian refugees from Bubakevo , Damyan , Gerkartsa , Litovy , Petgys , Orizartsev , Dybov , Bojmitsy , Libakhovo , Alare , Ramna and Yenidzhe-Vardara were settled in Sveti Vlas [5] .
In 1963, Sveti Vlas was declared a climatic sea resort. The microclimate here is favorable for the treatment of lung cancer. The resort was loved by citizens of Russia and the former USSR, who own 40% of real estate here.
Sveti Vlas began to develop actively after 2000, due to the boom in construction on the Black Sea coast, and the lack of free territories in the resort of Sunny Beach [6] .
In 2006, by the decision of the Council of Ministers of Bulgaria, the village of Sveti Vlas acquired the status of a city.
In 2007, the largest yacht port in Bulgaria (designed for 300 yachts) was opened in Sveti Vlas. Currently, Sveti Vlas is positioned as a hotel complex of apartments. Direct bus service is connected to Sunny Beach and Nessebar [7] .
