Physical Properties

A colorless liquid with a characteristic odor. The boiling point is 130-131 Β° C. It is moderately soluble in water, well in ethanol and diethyl ether . [one]

Getting

  • Obtained by pyrolysis of adipic acid in the presence of barium salts [2] or calcium ( cyclization of Ruzicki ).
  • Another method is the catalytic oxidation of cyclopentene by atmospheric oxygen [3] .
  • Oxidation of cyclopentane is also used [4] .

Chemical Properties

Chemical properties are similar to acyclic ketones . Forms an oxime .

Application

Cyclopentanone is mainly used as a flavoring agent. It is also a precursor for the synthesis of various organic compounds (eg, jasmone [5] , misoprostol , en: Cyclopentamine ).

Toxicology and Safety

Cyclopentanone irritates the skin and respiratory system, and a mixture of its vapors with air is explosive. In high concentrations it has a narcotic effect.
