Biography
Born December 24, 1934 in the Slavonic city of Orahovitsa ( Croatia ).
He graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University of Zagreb in 1961 . In the early 1970s, he took part in the anti-government movement for the equal rights of Croatia in Yugoslavia (the so-called “ Croatian Spring ”). He was sentenced to two years in prison, spent a year in prison. After leaving prison he worked as a lawyer, was engaged in scientific activities.
In 1989, he took an active part in the creation of the Croatian nationalist movement (subsequently transformed into a party), the Croatian Democratic Community (the party was chaired by Franjo Tudjman ). He was a secretary and then chairman of the party’s executive committee. The closest ally of Tudjman . In 1990, Mesic headed the government of the republic, and also became a member of the Presidium of the SFRY , replacing Stepan Shuvar , who was recalled by the Croatian parliament.
According to the constitutional cyclic system for changing the first persons, on May 15, 1991 he was supposed to become the chairman of the Presidium of the SFRY , however, due to opposition from the representatives of Serbia and Montenegro, he occupied this post only on July 1 . Participated in the process of separation of Yugoslavia . On October 3, he stopped participating in the activities of the Presidium, formally resigned on December 5 , after his recall by the Croatian Parliament.
In 1992, he became chairman of the Sabor (parliament) of the independent Republic of Croatia , from which he was removed in 1994 due to disagreement with the CDU policy, primarily on the Bosnian issue.
In May 1997, he voluntarily spoke at the Hague Tribunal , testifying about the activities of Croatian forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina . He left the CDU and founded a new party of Croatian Independent Democrats (HND). In 1997, after the split, the KNP became a member of the liberal-centrist Croatian People's Party (KNP) , headed the Zagreb city organization of the KNP. In the elections of February 7, 2000 , a few months after the death of Tujman , he was elected President of the Republic of Croatia .
In the elections of January 17, 2005 he was re-elected with a big advantage (received 66% of the vote, his rival Jadranka Kosor - 34%).
He speaks English. He studied Russian at school.
Political Beliefs, Reputation, Statements
He was a supporter of the withdrawal of Croatia from Yugoslavia and, as chairman of the Presidium of the SFRY in 1991, actually contributed to this. Supporter of the pro-Western orientation of Croatia, joining all Euro-Atlantic structures. The 2005 election program: Croatia's accession to the European Union and the achievement of the status of a European democratic state.
However, Mesic was criticized by Croatian nationalists for indirectly condemning the activities of the Croatian armed forces during the 1991-1995 war . In response to the so-called “ letter of the twelve generals ” calling for an end to the criminalization of the war, he immediately dismissed seven generals who signed this letter.
Statements
At the last meeting of the Presidium of the SFRY, it stated:
“Thank you for giving me the confidence to fight for the interests of Croatia in the area that was entrusted to me. I think I completed the task - Yugoslavia is no more ” [1] .
From a 1993 interview with the Izvestia newspaper about Milosevic :
I tried to warn Milosevic that he would end badly. “What are you doing, Slobo? I told him. - Are you going to fight with the whole world? But for this you need to mobilize two million Serbs in the army. And if you mobilize two million, the Serbs will rebel against you. You will be overthrown and then hanged. I only ask you, Slobo: when they hang you, remember these my words ” [2] .
Personal life
By nationality - Croat. Married since 1961 to Milka Dudundic, of Ukrainian [3] and Serbian [4] descent, hailing from the Croatian Kostajnica , with whom she has two daughters and two grandchildren.
