History
The history of the name of the village is directly related to the Zaraysk 140th Infantry Regiment . The Zaraysk regiment received baptism of fire in the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878, during which it particularly distinguished itself in the battle at the village of Karakhasankiyoy on August 18, 1877, where it laid down on Zaraytsov all the severity of the battle [1] .
Together with the division of the Luben Hussars, the Turks stopped the advance, but the latter, supported by the reinforcements arrived, went on the offensive again and forced the Zaraites to withdraw to Karahasankia. This village, lit by enemy artillery fire, passed from hand to hand 6 times and ultimately remained behind the Zarais. By 6 o’clock in the evening, when the fatigue of the regiment, which had been fighting all day under the scorching sun and had not eaten in the morning, had reached its limits, it was ordered to retreat, and 2 battalions had to make their way with bayonets. The Turkish name of the liberated village, Karahasankiyoy, was changed to Zaraevo in memory of the 140th Zaraisk Infantry Regiment, and so it remains in the official Bulgarian toponymy to this day.
