Geographical position
It is located on the banks of the German River, at the foot of the Rila mountain range [2] 65 km south of Sofia .
History
Near this city, on June 14, 987, a battle took place between the troops of the Bulgarian princes Aaron and Samuel , in which Samuel defeated, and Aaron was killed. This battle was called the Battle of Dupnitsa [3] .
During World War II, on January 4, 1944, US Air Force B-17 bombers bombed the city of Dupnitsa, with 50 killed and 40 wounded [4] .
In 1948, the city was renamed Stanke Dimitrov in memory of its famous native Stanke Dimitrov [2] ; in 1949-1950 the city was called Marek (party alias Stanke Dimitrov), but in 1950 the name was again changed to Stanke Dimitrov .
In 1975, the population was 45 thousand people, the city was a center for tobacco processing; pharmaceutical, instrument-making, fruit-canning and clothing industries. Coal mining was carried out in the vicinity and the Bobov-Dol TPP was located [2] .
In 1982, the population was 44 thousand people, the city was the center of the tobacco, fruit-canning and pharmaceutical industries [5] .
In 1990, the former name of the city was restored - Dupnitsa .
