Ecology
In 2007, specialists from the Kristineberg Research Marine Station proposed a project to improve the environmental situation in the waters of the strait . High concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus , which are waste products from agriculture in Sweden , are proposed to be reduced by artificial breeding of mussels . A similar project has already been successfully implemented on the western coast of Scandinavia , where mussels (in combination with other organisms) absorbed about 39 tons of nitrogen per year into their biomass . Specialists of the Kristineberg station and biotechnology Kalmar proposed that the government finance a similar project on the east coast of the Scandinavian Peninsula [1] .
Archeology
The areas along Kalmarsund have evidence of ancient Neolithic sites and Bronze Age settlements [2] ; In addition, it is known that Mesolithic peoples crossed the strait on ice in the early Holocene, when the glacier began to recede from the island of Öland. People who migrated through Kalmarsund in the sixth millennium BC e. founded one of the very first Mesolithic villages in northern Europe [3] .
