System administrator day

The “father” of the holiday is an American system administrator with 20 years of experience, Ted Kekatos , who saw a Hewlett-Packard magazine ad in which thankful users donated flowers and baskets of fruit to the new system administrator’s printers. Kekatos, who recently installed several printers of the same model, decided to create a special day dedicated to the profession of a system administrator. The first such day, arranged by Kekatos, fell on Friday , July 30, 1999 ^[1] . It was just a picnic on the outskirts of Chicago , in which members of a small software company took part. Since then, the holiday is usually celebrated on the last Friday of July.

Since 2006, the World Information Society Day has been celebrated (since 2007, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day ), which is fixed on May 17th . Proclaimed by the UN General Assembly , this memorable day has an official status, and, apparently, can be considered the official equivalent of the day of the system administrator .

Since 2006, an all -Russian gathering of system administrators is held annually around Kaluga , gathering more and more participants every year. So, if the first gathering was attended by about 350 people, then in 2009 more than 3,000 people from 174 cities in Russia , Ukraine , Belarus and Kazakhstan came to it ^[2] .

The LinuxFest festival, also held in the Kaluga region, is timed to the last Friday of July. A regular gathering of system administrators in Novosibirsk takes place on the shores of the Ob Sea .

The tradition of holding the “Day of the System Administrator” on the last Friday of July also exists in Yekaterinburg . At first, the meetings were spontaneous, and since 2010 the event is officially ^[3] held at the famous Keyboard Monument . It is accompanied by "industry" sports: throwing at a distance and the accuracy of non-working computer mice (mice with cut tails are thrown at an empty system unit ), as well as a power press of a bunch of hard disks with variable weight ^[4] . In 2016, the Day of the System Administrator on the monument was opened a memorial plaque in honor of the legendary system administrator Evgeny Zorin, whom the press calls the “father of the Ural Internet” ^[5] .
