Biography
Born in Helsinki in the family of Polish Jews, his real name is Moishe Stiller. His mother committed suicide when he was four years old. After that, he was raised in a family of friends of his parents. Since childhood, showed interest and ability to theater. He was drafted into the Russian army, but, not wanting to serve, fled to Sweden.
In 1912, Stiller began work in the rapidly growing silent film industry in Sweden, at the same time as a screenwriter, director (debuted with Mother and Daughter , a Swede. Mor och dotter ) and short film actor. As an actor, he starred in only five films, and after 1912 he almost completed an acting career in order to have more time on screenplays and directing. Soon he moved on to feature films. In 1918, the film The First Son of Thomas Grail ( Swede. Thomas Graals bästa barn ), starring Viktor Sjestrom , received many responses in the press. By 1920, Stiller, who had shot over thirty-five films by that time, was the leading figure in the Swedish film industry. Georges Sadul, along with Sjöström, called him the greatest master of Swedish cinema, describing it as follows: “This is a delicate, impressionable, somewhat feminine artist. He often creates deep and poetic images, and his perfect sense of plasticity plays an important role here. ” [1]
In 1920, at the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm, he saw a young actress named Greta Gustafson, and offered her an important supporting role in the movie The Saga of Joest Berling . He also chose a stage name for her, Greta Garbo . The film was a significant success, and Stiller and Garbo went to the United States, where they accepted an offer from Luis Meyer to take a job at Metro Goldwyn Meyer .
In Hollywood, Stiller began working on the film The Temptress . However, he could not adapt to the work in the big studio, and after many conflicts he was fired, and the film was transferred to Fred Niblo . Stiller was immediately hired by the rival studio Famous Players-Lasky Corporation , where he made three films, but was fired during the filming of the fourth as a result of constant disagreements with the studio owners.
Moritz Stiller returned to Sweden in 1927 and the next year died of pleurisy at the age of forty-five. He is buried at Stockholm cemetery in Norra.
