History
The Swedish Air Force was formed on July 1, 1926, by combining the aviation units that existed at that time in the Swedish army and naval forces. On the eve and during the Second World War, the Air Force was significantly increased and by 1945 had about 800 aircraft.
After the end of the war, Sweden purchased the most modern combat aircraft abroad at that time ( P-51 Mustang , De Haviland Vampire ), while developing its own aviation industry. In the late 1940s, the Saab 29 “Tunnan” fighter jet entered service, not inferior in performance to the best aircraft of the time - the Soviet MiG-15 and the American F-86 “Saber” .
In the 1950s, construction began on a highway suitable for use as airstrip (an idea borrowed from Germany ). In 1957, the Swedish Air Force was in fourth place in the world in terms of the number of aircraft.
During its existence, the Swedish Air Force participated in two armed conflicts. During the Soviet-Finnish war of 1939-1940. in Finland, a volunteer squadron based in combat operations against Soviet aviation was based. From 1961 to 1964, the Swedish squadron was part of the UN peacekeeping forces in the Congo ( ONUC ) and was involved in strikes against targets of the Catanhian separatists.
