He graduated from the Brussels Conservatory ( 1984 ) as a pianist, student of Robert Steyart . He performed as a pianist, including with improvisations. Since the early 1990s switched mainly to the composition. By the mid-2000s wrote five operas ( Orpheus staged his opera in 1993 by Jan Lauers ), concerts for violin and for piano and orchestra, vocal cycle “A Man in a Blue Cloak” ( German Der Mann im blauen Mantel ; 1994 ) on Rilke’s poems, four-string cycle quartets - “Theory” ( French La Théorie ; 1988 ), “Desire” ( French Le Désir ; 1991 ), “The Mirror” ( French Le Miroir ; 1996 ) and “Madness” ( French La Folie ; 2000 ), as well as a number of other symphonic and chamber works. The most famous collections of preludes and fugues by Hughes for two pianos are due to the fact that he repeatedly performed them in a duet with the famous American composer and pianist Frederick Rzhevsky . A fragment of the string quartet Theory was used in the soundtrack for Peter Greenaway 's Intimate Diary .
