Biography
Born on November 17 (30), 1905 in the family of Jacob Pokrass, a seller and co-owner of a sausage shop. In 1917 he graduated from the Kiev Musical College. In 1917 - 1921 he studied at the Kiev Conservatory in the class of piano. From 1921 he lived in Moscow, where he studied composition. Together with his brother, he worked at the Palace of Art Miniatures.
In 1926, for the first time in print, he published the romance “Eh, horses, faster” to the poems of E. Borisov (published by AMA). In 1936 - 1951, together with his brother - the musical director of the orchestra of the TsDZH. Due to the contrast of temperaments , the brothers in the work complemented each other well: the explosive, dynamic Dmitry offered a melody to the sensible, somewhat phlegmatic Daniel, who led the piano part.
The Brothers Pokrass are authors of famous songs: “If tomorrow is war” (verses by V.I. Lebedev-Kumach , 1938), “Three tankers” from the movie “ Tractor drivers ” (verses by B.S. Laskin, 1939 ). They are close to revolutionary songs, marching marches, they are distinguished by poster style, “speech” intonations, and bright dynamism. From the voice of L. O. Utyosov, the country sang the song “An order was given to him to the West” (verses by M. V. Isakovsky , 1938), austere and simultaneously lyrical. Popularity was “Thats not clouds - thunderclouds” (from the movie “ I am the son of the working people ”, verses by A.A. Surkov , 1938) and especially “ Moscow May ” (from the movie “The Twentieth May ”, verses by Lebedev -Kumacha, 1937 ) with its victorious majority.
Died April 16, 1954 of a heart attack. He was buried in Moscow at the Novodevichy Cemetery (station number 4).
