Biography
He studied at the Jesuit College in Brownsberg , but, returning to Sweden, broke up with the Jesuits, published Detectio fraudis jesuiticae and received a professorship in politics at Uppsala University . In the struggle of Charles IX with Sigismund, Messenius was on the side of the first and printedly proved his right to the throne.
Since 1611, Messenius published a number of historical works (Chronicon episcoporum per sueciam, Specula, Retorsio imposturarum, etc.), not alien to criticism and based on primary sources. His dramas were very popular at the time; their themes are historical. Messenius also owns a number of historical songs. In 1616, Messenius was accused of partnering with the Jesuits and Sigismund of Poland; he was sentenced to life imprisonment and imprisoned in Kayaneborg , near Uleaborg , and then in Uleoborg itself, where his imprisonment was significantly commuted and where he died. [3]
Messenius's main work is Scandia illustrata, which observes the history of Sweden before Christina reigned [4] . Here Messenius broke with many historical views of his contemporaries (for example, Ryudbek ) and stood on completely independent soil, as a result of which his work could only be published in 1700-1705. Messenius' Scandia illustrata is a feat of sorts, especially if one recalls the scarcity of historical works of the 16th century. The story of the liturgical conflict in the reign of John III - a chef d'oeuvre of its kind. Messenius combined the talent for exposition with great thoroughness of research and rare hard work. [3]
The son of Johannes Messenius, Arnold Johan Messenius (1608–1651), is also known as a historian. [3]
