History
Necken boats were built to replace obsolete Hayen submarines. Since instead of the six decommissioned Hyenas, three Necken were put into operation, the number of submarines in the Swedish Navy decreased from 15 to 12, which was offset by the improved capabilities of the new submarines.
The submarine “Necken” was the first in the Swedish fleet to receive a computer-based combat information-control system, which made it possible to accompany several targets and attack them from great distances. In 1988, the Necken was refitted. In the eight-meter section of the hull, embedded in the middle of the boat, the Stirling system’s air-independent engines were located, which allowed the boat to remain continuously under water for several weeks, as before, for several weeks. Its pilot operation made it possible to equip the Westerjötland and Gotland projects with Stirling engines.
The Neptune submarine played an important role in the episode of the U-137 submarine (Soviet S-363 of Project 613), discovered on October 27, 1981 in shallow water in Swedish territorial waters.
