Mullah, mullah ( Arabic. مُلَّا , from Arabic. مَوْلَى - lord, ruler, lord, Arabic . المُلَّا al-mullaa, mawlá /; Persian ملّا, Turkish. Molla ) - Islamic cleric, expert on the Qur'an and religious rites among Muslims . In the Russian Empire, mullahs were often called the totality of existing Muslim clergy [1] , sometimes madrassa teachers and simply literate people [2] . Among the Shiites, the mullah is the leader of the religious community, the theologian , and an expert in the interpretation of issues of faith and law (among the Sunnis , the ulama performs these functions).

Russian Empire
The activities of the mullahs were controlled by officials, and their appointment was carried out by special decree. Mullah usually consisted of a particular mosque [2] .
Caucasus
In the Caucasus, the mullahs are also called muezzins , “everyday” imams and other lower clergy, while the “ Friday ” imam, Kadi and Sheikh-ul-Islam are called Mullah-Akhund (among Shiites ) or Mullah-effendi (among Sunnis ) [3] .
