Biography

Born in 1877 in Mahilyow . He graduated from the Higher Art School at the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1911 . In 1919 - 1921 was an employee of the 1st Petrograd architectural studio. Won eleven awards in open architectural competitions.

In 1921 he repatriated to Palestine . In 1923, he founded a school of fine arts and architecture in his house on Gruzenberg street in Tel Aviv , and he himself became the head of the department of architecture. In 1924, he and his architect Richard Passovski founded his own firm. And in 1925, they also founded the "Association of Engineers and Architects of Palestine | Association of Engineers and Architects of Palestine" (now the " Association of Engineers and Architects of Israel "). During 1931 - 1936, he worked with his son Zeev Berlin . His projects were notable for the specific use of silicate bricks, then the main building material in Tel Aviv . Leaving the brick not plastered, he created a special game of abstract forms, slightly resembling expressionism and art deco . Examples of this are his own home and the Mograbi cinema in Tel Aviv . The most famous of his projects are the Tel Aviv cinema on Mograbi Square, the House of Berlin, the building of the printing house of the newspaper “ Ha-Arets ”, a residential building on Rothschild Boulevard .
