The film begins as black and white. Inventor Alexander Sergeevich Timofeev (aka Shurik) creates a time machine . Another experiment to launch it, periodically leading to burnout of traffic jams in the entrance, ended in an explosion, burnout of traffic jams in the whole house and loss of consciousness by Shurik. With the beginning of Shurik's dream, the film becomes color.

The wife of Timofeev, film actress Zinaida Mikhailovna (aka Zina), comes from the shoot to a smoky apartment No. 20 and tells Shurik that she is leaving him and leaving for Gagra with her new lover, film director Karp Savelievich Yakin. At this time, a recidivist thief, Georges Miloslavsky, was robbing an apartment of Timofeev’s neighbor, dentist Anton Semenovich Shpak. This is apartment number 22. In the presence of the manager of Ivan Vasilyevich Bunshi, Shurik experiences a time machine at low power, and the wall between the apartments of Shurik and Shpak disappears.

The surprised Georges Miloslavsky enters Shurik's apartment. He is interested in a machine that can clean the walls, and the manager is interested in Shpak's suspicious “friend”. Shurik increases power, and the royal chambers open through the wall. Ivan the Terrible is sitting on the throne, and clerk Theophanes is nearby. Seeing the aliens and mistaking them for demons, the frightened Theophan escapes for the guards, and the king is frightened by the black cat Shurik and escapes to his apartment, and from there to the porch.

A guard bursts into the wards. One of the reeds thrown by the archer at Miloslavsky, and then vice versa (Miloslavsky at the archer), falls into the remote control of a time machine. It breaks, leaving Ivan the Terrible in the modern world, and Ivan Vasilyevich Bunshu and Georges Miloslavsky in the 16th century. Fleeing the guard, Miloslavsky notices the outward similarity of Bunshi and Ivan the Terrible and makes the house manager change into the found royal clothing. Bunsha disguises himself as king, while Miloslavsky pretends to be a prince.

In the XX century, Shurik explains to the tsar what happened, treats him to “Stolichnaya” vodka and asks him to wait until he runs to the store for new transistors for a time machine. Ivan the Terrible remains in the apartment, adapts to modern life and finds himself involved in clashes with modern heroes. He manages to reconcile Zina and Yakin who came to her for his suitcase. The couple leaves for Gagra, while Yakin's new lover calls up all the acquaintances, boasting that he is going to Gagra with Yakin.

Ivan the Terrible behaves belligerently in relation to Shpak, appreciating that as a serf, incorrectly serving the petition to the tsar; swears with Ulyana Andreevna Bunsha, who mistook the king for her husband, who got drunk with his neighbors. The frightened wife of Bunshi calls psychiatrists, who says that the tsar has a fever, and Shpak calls the police to tell them that Shurik has sheltered the "living king" in his apartment.

In tsarist times, it is also restless: Bunsha, by all signs, betrays that he is not a real king, and Miloslavsky conducts business for him. The reception of the Swedish ambassador almost ended in scandal - Bunsha almost gives the Kemsky parish to the Swedes, but Miloslavsky pulls him off and tells the ambassador that he needs to consult. During the feast, Ivan Vasilyevich Bunsha flirts with Ivan the Terrible's pretty wife, Marfa Vasilyevna , and gets drunk.

The army sent to Izyum shly, returns and raises a riot. Sagittarius burst into the royal chambers to capture the impostors. But, finally, the time machine fixed by Shurik is triggered, and Ivan Vasilyevich Bunsha and Georges Miloslavsky return to the 20th century. Militiamen detain Ivan the Terrible at the call of Shpak, and Bunsha surrenders himself, claiming that he "illegally" temporarily acted as king (as Miloslavsky forced him). Ivan the Terrible, hearing this, pounces on his double, and a fight ensues.

The orderlies of the psychiatric ambulance team, who arrived with the police, put on straitjackets on both participants in the scuffle. Police bring both Ivanov to Ulyana Andreevna for identification. She recognizes her husband both in Bunsh and in the king. Having decided that she, too, had gone mad, Ulyana Andreevna takes off her wig and goes with the doubles to a mental hospital.

Miloslavsky puts on Shurik's white coat and tries to hide under the guise of a medic. Orderlies and disguised as a paramedic Miloslavsky take "patients" to the street. At that moment, the policemen, having found his release certificate in the jacket left by Georges Miloslavsky, find out that Georges Miloslavsky himself was in their hands. From the balcony, they scream to the doctors about it, and everyone rushes in pursuit of Miloslavsky. Taking advantage of the turmoil, Ivan the Terrible runs out of the ambulance and runs into the apartment to Shurik, who starts his time machine again. The entrance to the chambers opens, and Ivan the Terrible returns in due time, but at the same time Shurik’s cat is scared again, throws a hat at it and runs away, forgetting to pick up this hat.

In the epilogue, the film again becomes black and white. Shurik woke up, rose from the floor and does not understand what really happened. A knock on the door brings him to life a little. He goes to open and sees behind the door the Bunshas, ​​threatening him with a complaint for turning off the entire house. Shurik asks them: “ What, have you already been released from the insane asylum? ”, Enraging its interlocutors. Gradually, consciousness returns to him, and then he remembers that his wife left him.

Soon from work comes Zina. Shurik asks her about a trip to Gagra and about the connection with Yakin. Screen Tests

The first version of the script was written by Gaidai under Yuri Nikulin , who, after reading it, flatly refused to appear, explaining that the year of filming would be wasted - the film would be put on the shelf. After Nikulin's refusal, eight actors auditioned for the king’s role, including:

• Evgeny Evstigneev (the artistic council did not like his samples);
• George Vitsin (associated with the Coward of the famous trinity );
• Evgeny Lebedev (according to Gaidai, he looked excellent in the image of the tsar, but did not convince him in the image of the house manager);
• Vladimir Etush (he played Anton Semenovich Shpak).

As a result, the role went to Yuri Yakovlev , who, on trial, was able to split into a miserable Bunshu and a formidable king.

With the approval of Yakovlev for both roles, a problem arose with the performer of the role of Georges Miloslavsky, who, according to the director, was supposed to play Andrei Mironov . In comparison with the game of Yuri Yakovlev, Andrei Mironov could not completely convey the character. Having tried a number of actors, among whom were Georgy Yumatov , Sergey Nikonenko , Georgy Burkov , Vyacheslav Nevinniy and Anatoly Kuznetsov , Gaidai stopped at Leonid Kuravlev.

A difficult choice was among female performers. Three Natalia auditioned for the role of Zina: Selezneva , Gundareva and Gvozdikova ^{[2] [3]} .

Filming

Filming began in May 1972 ^[2] and took place in the following places:

• Video clip for the song “To meet with love (January blizzard rings)” - Yalta (end of filming period: March 1973).

• Shurik's house - house number 13 (building 1) along Novokuznetskaya street in Moscow ^[2] , approximately in the middle between the Novokuznetskaya and Paveletskaya metro stations. There was a Svetoch store in it (part of the sign is visible in frames).

• All interior interiors: the entrance of the Shurik house, the elevator, the stairwells, the apartments of Shpak and Shurik, as well as the royal chambers - all this was shot in the same scenery at the movie studio ^[4] .

Songs

• Initially, the song of Alexander Zatsepin on the words of Leonid Derbenev “To meet with love” (“The January Blizzard Rings”) for the film was recorded by Sofia Rotaru . However, this option (due to the serious and soulful manner of performance) was not suitable for the comedy genre of the film. As a result, the song was rewritten, and the final version of the film included the performance of Nina Brodskaya . Subsequently, Rotaru sang this song in the performance of " First Ambulance " on New Year's Eve 2005-2006.

Prop

• The time machine for filming in the film was created by an artist, wood sculptor and cartoonist Vladislav Pochechuev. The original version of the time machine, made by a special bureau, turned out to be an expressionless model of a standard computer . V. Pochechuev sketched a sketch of a new model and with the help of a designer, a locksmith and a glassblower in a few days created a new time machine that creates a sense of miracle in the audience ^[5] .

Reception and censorship

The comical image of the tsar-impostor was perceived as a mockery of Ivan the Terrible , and therefore the episode where the tsar fries cutlets in Timofeev's kitchen was excluded from the film.

Some fragments were re-sounded by the director for censorship reasons :

• The episode was banned, where Zina, caring for Ivan the Terrible in Shurik’s apartment, says: “You never know what they might think! ", But the lips read:" You [that is, the king] can be seen here! ".
• Bunshi’s phrase was re-voiced in the episode of the appeal to the Swedish ambassador - instead of the script phrase “ Peace, friendship! ”It turned out:“ Hitler kaput ” ^[2] (in the original play by Bulgakov Bunsha at that moment says:“ I only know revolutionary words in foreign languages, but I forgot everything else ... ”, to which Miloslavsky’s answer follows:“ Well, say at least revolutionary otherwise you don’t say any words ”).

On the pen, which Miloslavsky stole from Shpak and presented to the ambassador, a naked woman was depicted. Close-ups were cut out of the film, as nude women were then forbidden to show ^[6] . After making all the changes, the timing of the film decreased by 10 minutes ^[2] , but the original negative of the film is stored at the Mosfilm studio .

There is a truncated short version of the film called Black Gloves, stylized as a silent movie . This tape was produced on a reel with an 8-mm film, and in Soviet times it could be bought for home viewing. The main character of this 12-minute film is Georges Miloslavsky , whose “black gloves” appear in the frame on the eve of the next crime he commits.

The short version includes fragments cut from the theatrical version of the film, including the final scene with Miloslavsky - the hero, dressed as an orderly, helps bring Ivan Vasilyevich to the ambulance . The police begin to pursue him, and on this the storyline with the character in the full-length film ends, so the fate of the viewer is unknown to the viewer.

In the short film, the final scene is. Georges is swimming on a water bus accompanied by two girls. When the transport emerges from under the dark bridge, two policemen are already sitting on the sides of Georges ^[7] .
