Algarve ( port. Algarve [aɫ'gaɾv (ɨ)] ) is an economic-statistical region in southern Portugal . Includes Faro County. The territory is 4995 km². The population is 451,006 people (2011). The administrative center is the city of Faro .

Geography
The region borders:
- in the north - Alentejo ( Alentejo-Litoral and Baixu-Alentejo subregions)
- in the east - Spain across the Guadiana River
- in the south - the Atlantic Ocean
- in the west - the Atlantic Ocean
History
The Algarve got its name from the Arabs: in their language, the word meant a country located in the west. In 1189 King Sancho I conquered the Algarve city of Silvish, which belonged to the Arabs, and took the title of King of Algarve, which his heirs also carried. In 1261, King Afonso III finally included the Algarve in the kingdom of Portugal.
Tourism
In the 1960s, the Algarve became a popular holiday destination, especially among British tourists. Since then, in addition to the British, Germans, Dutch and Irish people regularly spend holidays there. Many own property in the region. In addition to scenic spots and many beaches, there is a network of golf courses. There are a total of 34 international golf courses, 5 of which are located in Vilamoura . In November, there are several international golf tournaments: The Portuguese Algarve Open, the President's Cup, the Vilamoura Grand Trophy, the Expresso / BPI Golf Cup and the Algarve World Cup, and numerous golf schools operate throughout the year. There is a Golf Academy in Vilamoura. Twice, in 2013 and in 2014, the Algarve was recognized as the best golf resort in the world. [2]
Algarve is a very popular place for religious tourism. Every year its sacred sites attract many pilgrims, Catholics.
