Historical Province of Algarvi

The Algarve got its name from the Arabs: in their language, the word meant a country located in the west. In 1189 King Sancho I conquered the Algarve city of Silvish, which belonged to the Arabs, and took the title of King of Algarve, which his heirs also carried. In 1261, King Afonso III finally included the Algarve in the kingdom of Portugal.

Tourism

In the 1960s, the Algarve became a popular holiday destination, especially among British tourists. Since then, in addition to the British, Germans, Dutch and Irish people regularly spend holidays there. Many own property in the region. In addition to scenic spots and many beaches, there is a network of golf courses. There are a total of 34 international golf courses, 5 of which are located in Vilamoura . In November, there are several international golf tournaments: The Portuguese Algarve Open, the President's Cup, the Vilamoura Grand Trophy, the Expresso / BPI Golf Cup and the Algarve World Cup, and numerous golf schools operate throughout the year. There is a Golf Academy in Vilamoura. Twice, in 2013 and in 2014, the Algarve was recognized as the best golf resort in the world. [2]
