Biography

Claudius Bird was born on January 21 ( February 3 ), 1911 in Pronsk (now Ryazan Region , Russia) in the family of a rural doctor (mother is a teacher).

From the age of 10 (1921-1928) he sang in a church choir, played in an amateur orchestra at school, conducted a choir. In 1929-1932 he studied at the Ryazan College of Music (now Ryazan College of Music named after G. and A. Pirogov). During the war years, taught for some time in it.

In 1937 he graduated from the conducting and choral department of the Moscow Conservatory in the class of G. A. Dmitrevsky , in 1940 - graduate school.

In 1936-1938 he was the chief choirmaster of the Opera Studio of the Moscow Conservatory, in 1938-1941 he was the choirmaster of the Moscow Philharmonic , in 1943-1946 he was the choirmaster of the USSR State Choir (now the A. V. Sveshnikov State Academic Russian Choir ).

From 1950 to 1983 - artistic director and chief conductor of the Academic Bolshoi Choir of Central Television and All-Union Radio (from 2005 - the Academic Bolshoi Choir β€œMasters of Choral Singing” of the Russian State Musical Television and Radio Center ). He performed more than 20 opera concert productions, performed a large number of cantata-oratorio works by Russian and foreign composers, as well as choral works by Soviet songwriters.

In 1938-1941 and since 1943 he taught at the Moscow Conservatory (since 1956 - professor, since 1960 - head of the department of choral conducting). At the same time in 1946 - 1960 - dean of the faculty of choral conducting of the State Musical Pedagogical Institute. Gnesins (now the Gnesins Russian Academy of Music ), in 1947-1952 - head of the department of choral conducting of the Music College named after Gnesins . Among the students: N. Vetlugina, V. Balashov, L. Grigorov, N. Dobrovolskaya, V. Zhivov, L. Iskhanova, V. Krasnoshchekov , B. Kulikov , A. Osipov, G. Rozhdestvenskaya, E. Sidorova and others [ one]

Author of a number of books and articles, including Essays on the Technique of conducting a choir ( 1948 ) and Masters of Choral Art at the Moscow Conservatory ( 1970 ); valuable are, in particular, his recollections of S. A. Samosud and A. V. Gauk . In 1994, selected articles and interviews compiled a collection of music and musicians.

Chairman of the Moscow Choral Society (since 1959). Deputy Chairman of the All-Russian Choral Society (since 1958).

He died on January 6, 1983 in Moscow. He was buried at Kuntsevsky cemetery .
