Creation History

Thurston Moore talked about the design of the album [3] :

“Initially, we had the idea to rewrite the whole Beatle’s white album again, but we only learned“ Back in the USSR ”and didn’t advance further ... Anyway, the decision to make a double album remained, only now we began to take our own music more seriously . And so it turned out Daydream Nation : a look at pop culture from the area of the culture in which we ourselves were. "

The album was recorded in July — August 1988 in the New York studio Greene St. Recording. Although musically it was significantly more straightforward and melodic than earlier releases of Sonic Youth, at the same time this time the group allowed itself more freedom in the studio and recorded in the recording the long improvisational jams that their rehearsals were famous for. As a result, Daydream Nation "stretched" to a double album [4] . The record cost the group $ 30,000 - Daydream Nation became their most “expensive” record at that time [4] .

Criticism Reaction

Daydream Nation went on sale in October 1988. The release of the album was preceded by the release of the singles " Teen Age Riot " and " Silver Rocket ", the first of which rose to 20th place in Modern Rock Tracks [5] . Nevertheless, the album itself did not achieve such popularity and reached only 99th place in the UK Album Charts [6] . Despite moderate success with the public, Daydream Nation has won many accolades from music critics. Rolling Stone wrote that on this album "the main American guitar band of the 1980s appeared before the public at the peak of power and providence" [7] . NME called it "the most radical album of the year" [4] . He was later on the Rolling Stone Magazine's list of 500 greatest albums of all time at number 348 [8] , ranked first in the top 100 best albums of the 1980s by Pitchfork Media [9] and thirteenth in the list of best albums of 1985-2010 according to Spin [10] . All Music Guide columnist Mark Deming called the album “the first unconditional masterpiece” of the group, which “expressed the fusion of their love of noise effects and the sound of electric guitars with compositional structures that incorporated elements of punk , prog , boogie and psychedelia. ” [1]

Design

On the cover of the album there is a fragment of the “Candle” painting by Gerhard Richter [11] . On the reverse side is another Richter painting, also depicting a candle, a track list is printed on top of it. Four symbols were depicted on the plates and on the CD , mimicking the corresponding Led Zeppelin symbols and showing the band members: the infinity sign , Venus mirror , omega and caricature of a drummer with angel wings and a halo and devil horns and tail [11] .

In 2011, the album cover took 23rd place in the list of the best album covers of all time according to readers of the online edition of Music Radar [12] .
