Malcolm Bilson ( born Malcolm Bilson ; born October 24, 1935 ) is an American pianist and keyboard player , a prominent representative of the movement of authentic performance .

Of primary importance for historical performance were, first of all, two projects of Bilson. In the 1980s Together with conductor John Eliot Gardiner and his English Baroque Soloists Orchestra, Bilson recorded a series of piano concerts by Mozart using a hammer piano , an early form of instrument, a contemporary composer; According to the results of this project, explaining in detail his choice in favor of authenticity, Bilson noted that
through other instruments you come to some excellent way of playing music. It all starts with sound, because it is through sound that we perceive music; but here rhythm and phrasing also matter: looking at the Mozartian division into phrases, at its articulation, at its designation of dynamics, you soon find out that it is much easier to implement these instructions in this way than using modern means. <...> And this is the whole point: naturally, you will not be a great actor just because you pronounce your lines correctly. <...> However, think about the following: let there be someone, even a completely wonderful actor, but if he is not able to pronounce sentences with the correct intonation, can he then adequately convey the emotions embedded in them? [four]
In 1996 , Bilson, in collaboration with six students, recorded all Beethoven's piano sonatas, using for each instrument that existed at the time of its creation - restored or reproduced in copy.
In 2002 , Bilson performed in Moscow with the works of Haydn , Carl Philip Emanuel Bach , Mozart and Beethoven. Moscow music criticism noted Bilson’s depth of understanding of specific musical material and the intricacies of musical evolution, however, he generally appreciated Bilson’s play coolly, paying attention to his inaccuracies and leaning towards the rejection of the principle of authenticity conclusion about the museum character of the sound that occurs when using an old instrument [5] [6 ] [6 ] ] [7] .
Bilson has been teaching at Cornell University since 1968 . Among his students, in particular, Bart van Oort , Ursula Dütschler and others.
