The party was formed in 1990 .
The party takes a national-centrist position (according to other estimates - the left), advocates for agrarian reform, as well as the cessation of payments on foreign debt and cooperation with the IMF. In 2002, she managed to get one seat in parliament out of 513 seats, but in 2005 not a single one. She was a member of the coalition supporting President Lula da Silva from 2002 to 2010.
