The shield is held by leopards - the national animal of Benin. The shield is crowned with a crest - a national symbol, consisting of two screwed horns filled with grain and sand. It is believed that they are a symbol of prosperity. Below the crest is a shield that contains the actual emblem of Benin. Under the shield is Benin 's motto “Brotherhood, Justice, Labor” ( French Fraternité, Justice, Travail ).
